Nearly Perfect: 1975 AMC Hornet Hatchback

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

There is no doubt that the color combination on this AMC Hornet makes it very attractive, and it is a combination that was very typical of the era. You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Lakeland, Florida, it is listed with a salvage title due to some legal issues during its earlier life. Bidding for this Hornet is currently sitting at $6,775 but the reserve hasn’t been met.

Apparently the story with the title on this car is that it was in long-term storage in Kentucky. The car was abandoned for storage fees, and the tow yard operator went through the process of acquiring a new title. However, it was branded as a salvage due to the legal process in place.

The seller claims that this Hornet has traveled a mere 38,000 miles, but I am unsure whether he has the documentation to back this claim. What I will say is that the car does not wear its original paint. It has undergone a fairly substantial cosmetic refurbishment which has included a re-paint and new vinyl stripes. Looking around the outside of the car I was really struggling to find a fault, but then I found something. In this shot if you look at where the bolt passes through the bumper on the left side you can see a tiny dent in the bumper (and that really is nit-picking). Apart from that the car appears to be straight and looks as good as new.

The interior has also undergone a partial refurbishment, but a lot of the original items are still present. The only new items are the covers on the seats. Everything else is original, and mostly in really good condition. I found some wear on the chrome trim just below the glove compartment lock and what appears to be a couple of small tears on the passenger side door trim, but otherwise the remainder of the interior plastic and carpet appears great. There is more wear on the wheel rim than I would have expected on a car of this claimed mileage.

Under the hood continues the theme of a car that looks nice and clean. The car features the 232ci inline six backed by an automatic transmission. It also features power steering which should make for effortless driving. The seller gives little information about how well the car drives. We do know that the car is sitting on newer whitewall tires.

I’m not sure exactly where the seller has set the reserve on this particular Hornet, but I have searched and found it located in a couple of locations with an asking price of $12,500. Looking around at other offerings that are currently available indicates that the Hatchback is fetching anywhere from $10,000-$13,000. This one is probably the nicest that I could find advertised, but the others all appear to be in original condition. So do you think that it would be worth more as it stands, or if it were in good original condition?

If the man aquired the car through a storage fee auction, he wouldn’t know if the miles were original or it had gone over.

Only the original owner could tell you that.

That wear on the steering wheel tells all. Likely a car with 138K miles instead, with a well done cosmetic restore. Still a nice car.

Unrestored with a “brand new repaint?”

There’s an old midwest sayin’, “don’t be a-pourin’ a bucket of hot pig m’nure on my back, an’ tellin’ me yore makin’ a hot fudge sundae.”

Ok. That was a semi-mixed metaphor for those of y’alls that are highly educated. I jes’ calls it a semi-for.

        Shouldn’t that be ‘edumacated’?

Robert. What’s more beneficial; sheep skins, or potato skins
(loaded, both preferably and indubitably). Otherwise, it just would not be civilized.

Thanks gang for allowing the levity. My wife of 48 years is having to go through yet another bout. Sitting in waiting rooms allows for such nonsense.

Nice car, for those that favor coupes. My mother drove me around as a toddler in a ’71 SST sedan, but I’ve always liked the Sportabout wagon version.

Hornets always make me think of John Belushi. Granted, the car in “Neighbors” was a wagon and a ’74 (I looked it up), but still… By the way, in my book “Neighbors” is a weird, demented little gem (besides being the guys last movie before he passed) and I’d rather watch it, along with “1941” than “Blues Brothers” any day of the week. Seriously.

“Continental Divide” was another late film of his, not sure where in the chronology. He is a serious journalist stuck in a cabin in the wilderness. I thought it was a great movie at the time. Went nowhere at the box office. Look for it if you are a Belushi fan.

Nice clean car! My grandpa bought a 1973 brand new only with A/C and had it till he passed in 2002. Only it was plum in color. This one still has the original radio!

if you look at the bumper in the front it is crooked and the rear bumper is crumpled below the drivers tail light. The gap lines on the trunk are off also one side larger than the other. I think this was in a accident and the frame is a littleoff kilter. This seller has posted tons of classic cars and i always find some manure hidden under the prettty skirts of the cars.

That’s a good pickup there. I honestly didn’t notice it at the time, but the similarity is striking.

Besides the question of wether or not the lister is a crook is the fact(at least in Cali) that any vehicle that has a salvage title is harder to insure. I tried to renew my insurance at AAA last year and because of floods and other natural and unatural disasters people are salvaging flooded cars and reselling them with salvage title. With great effort and a long story of how I bought it from someone with a salvaged title. I got it insured.

A lot of negative comments and none of any value. After the ones about the dealer, I lost total interest. If this was from a private seller, I’d be all over it. Maybe a little less money…
