No Reserve 1991 Ford Mustang LX 302 V8

Though they sold well enough, the second generation of the Ford Mustang wasn’t a favorite with lovers of the original pony car. That was the Mustang II era of 1974-78 when they became a subcompact to save fuel. When the cars were redesigned in 1979, Ford tried to recover some of the original magic. Based on the Fox-body platform, the rejuvenated Mustang would live on for 14 years before another reincarnation. This 1991 edition looks to be in great shape, thanks in part to brand-new paint. Located in Waynesville, Ohio, this latter third-gen Mustang is available here on eBay where the ante so far is $7,200.

The 1979-93 “Foxbody” Mustangs were bigger and more powerful, using the platform conceived for the 1978 Fairmont and its Mercury cousin, the Zephyr. Passengers were treated to more space for themselves and their stuff, in part due to a longer wheelbase. Three body styles were offered, including the hatchback you see here. There were several levels of trim over the duration with the LX appearing to be somewhere in the middle. The 302 cubic inch V8 in the seller’s car was a popular choice when fuel economy wasn’t the #1 reason for the purchase.

Sales for 1991 were modest considering the underpinnings were a dozen years old. More than 90,000 Mustangs were built in ’91, a far cry from the 1966 heyday of 607,000 units. Just under 17,000 copies were the hatchback like the seller’s Calypso Green example which we’re told is a recent respray. The car presents quite well, even the interior, which is more than passable at 93,000 or 101,000 miles, depending on whether you consult the odometer or the title.

Besides the 5.0-engine, this ‘Stang has a 5-speed manual transmission which should help the car in the zip department. The seller says the vehicle runs and drives great and it looks like a turnkey automobile for you to take to Cars & Coffee next weekend. A video is provided to augment the photos as few of them show the entire car (most are sections of the Ford). Are you a Foxbody Mustang fan?

Great example of the early 90’s teal, oops, calypso green. All the automakers seemed to have their own take on the post-Miami Vice colors. 5.0 and five speed were a great combo.

Well, they weren’t what they once were, but the same can be said for the competition, most of which were long gone by this time. These were potent little cars back in the 80s and 90s, still popular today with drag racers. They’re also still an affordable way for the young guys to get into the classic car scene, at least the one’s that don’t have their nose stuck to a rice cake. And they’ve soldiered on with no gap in production, unlike the others. I bought a 79 Pace Car in 1980, 302, auto, drove it for 10 years, no hassles

For those who bemoan the huge rise in Fox Body prices in recent years, this might be an alternative. It’s pretty good but not perfect. I see wear on the interior but not out of line for the mileage. The floor mats look terrible; why wouldn’t the selling dealer spring for a new set (they are not expensive)? The dusty engine suggests it has been sitting. So overall, a used but not abused Fox Body, for which the respray solved the main issue?

Assuming the fresh respray (it’s a very eye-catching color) is decent and the price doesn’t get too far into five figures, there could be lots of fun here.

Up to $9100 as of this morning. Mine was a little rougher when I bought it for four grand three years ago but it’s been a mostly solid driver once I got it sorted out.

I hope they put exhaust on it before they sell it, check the pics on Ebay, no exhaust from the cats back.

Hmmm, seems way high on price for the 80’s/90″s divorced woman version.

I’ve these cars, hate that dash & interior color. That said, if my oldest son had the $$, I might be tempted to “push” this towards him (Mom would probably kill me though!).

Nice little LX. Just enough fixes to keep you busy. 5.0 with a manual. Fun color to throw off the competition. This should be redemption for the red one of a couple days ago.

Had one of these only a medium blue and ordered with all Cobra drivetrain and suspension. Definitely makes a difference in the performance department. Unfortunately it also made a difference in the ability to find a transmission for it also. The input shaft is considerably bigger around than the regular H.O. 5.0 is. I bought 3 of them before I took what was left of mine to the Ford dealership. That’s when I found out it was all Cobra and that at the time I wasn’t going to be able to afford a trans for it. Ended up selling it and right after the guys shop burned to the ground. Including my car. Still kinda stings when I think about it. Boy was that car fun to drive but expensive on tires.

It didn’t take a whole lot of work on that 302 to make it a pretty wicked little ride. I helped a buddy of mine who had a 5.0 we changed cam, heads and induction a set of headers and good exhaust and that took an already respectable ride to a pretty darn impressive ride. I am not saying it’s the best looking car but lots of potential!

Wife and I were having a fight back in the day. I bought one of these (silver) the same day she bought a new Taurus. Got rid of both of all 3 a couple of years later…shoulda kept the Mustang!

There is definitely something funky going on with this vehicle and the discrepancy on the mileage. The odometer should be the measure of what the vehicle has on it – 93,298 – yet the provided vehicle report shows mileage of 102,852 on 8/23. Probably some sort of reporting screwup and 10K doesn’t make a huge difference, but might call for a close scrutiny of the title.
