The Commando was Jeep’s response to the Ford Bronco, Toyota Land Cruiser, and International Scout. From 1967 to 1973, there were several body styles and two models offered, the C101 and C104 (which stood for the length of the wheelbase in inches). The seller has a nice-looking 1972 edition called a Jeep Commander, but the script on the front fender distinctively says “Commando”. Having had the same owner for 50 years, it can be found in a garage in Waynesboro, Virginia, and is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $25,000.
When the Commando was conceived, Jeep was owned by Kaiser Jeep. When the seller’s C104 was built in 1972, Jeep was in the American Motors family (and later Chrysler). You could buy one as a pickup, convertible, roadster, or wagon (like this one). The familiar “Hurricane” inline 4 was replaced by an AMC I-6 and 3-4 cubic inch V8 under AMC’s watch. After the Commando was discontinued, it was replaced by the full-size Cherokee. The seller’s vehicle should be one of 20,000 Commando’s produced in 1972 and 1973.
The seller is the 3rd owner of this Commando, with the other two owning it in just its first couple of years. It received a repaint about five years ago and the limited photos show a good body with a removable top. He isn’t anxious to sell the vehicle, and it has received a recent tune-up and battery. It runs and drives as it should, with either a 232 or 258 inline-6 under the hood, paired with a manual transmission. 103,000 miles are said to have accumulated over the past 53 years.
We’re told a spare set of factory tires and wheels is available, but no mention is made of whether they’re included in the sale. The engine may need some attention, as the seller says it “smokes a little bit”—does that mean the rings are getting tired? Since these vintage SUVs have gained in popularity over the years, does that include you as a potential buyer of this Jeep? Thanks for the tip, “justpaul!”
The pictures shows a dam near time capsule example of a 1972 Jeep commando with everything I can see in near perfect shape! No wonder they are asking so much but better pictures are needed
Hardly.
you couldn’t restore one of these for double the price they were asking. Nice price for a good original time capsule Jeep.
