Update: 1977 AMC Pacer D/L Wagon

UPDATE – This 1977 AMC Pacer wagon is listed for sale again – this time here on eBay and in Fraser, Michigan. The seller is asking $19,995, $10,770 more than what it was listed for back in September. Please check out the photos in the new listing and let us know your thoughts on this one. Thanks to Larry D. for sending in this tip!

FROM 09/15/2022 – Yes, the words nice and Pacer go together, at least in my world they do. This 1977 AMC Pacer wagon is one of the nicest ones that I’ve seen, even though it has a couple of modifications from stock. The seller has this wacky wagon listed here on eBay in beautiful Simi Valley, California and there is no reserve and a current bid price of $7,602.

I’m on the fence as to if I like the wagon version for its utility or the sedan for its classic fishbowl rear-side windows. The current bid price seems like a heck of a deal, as they don’t say in Simi Valley, California. It is, Hagerty is at $8,100 for a #3 good condition car with a smaller engine than this example has, so as of now, this is a great deal.

The seller has provided a lot of great photos which is refreshing, even a few underside photos that show what looks like a very dry and rust-free undercarriage. Other than normal light surface rust, that is. This is a mid-run Pacer, coming about two years after they came out and two years before they went away. It’s hard to believe that the first chisel-edged Chrysler K-car came out not that long after the last uber-round Pacer was leaving the marketplace.

This car appears to be in beautiful condition and the seller mentions that the interior and some trim have been redone to add some flair, and the seats do look great. I’m an original or original spec guy, but I guess if a funky plaid fabric wasn’t available, these would work nicely. I’d still change out the inserts to a more 1970s pattern fabric. The rear cargo area looks like it’s never even held a Q-tip let alone luggage or bags of mulch, it looks brand new.

Interstate battery: check. The engine compartment looks like a time capsule back to six months after this car rolled off of the assembly line, beautiful. This is AMC’s venerable 258 cubic-inch inline-six which would have had 114 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. I can’t imagine a nicer 258-equipped Pacer wagon being for sale anywhere in the U.S. right now, this looks like a museum car to me. It starts, runs, and drives great, according to the owner and I would sure like to own this car. How about you?

Oh no, they got uglier – they ended up putting the snout grille on the later ones, remember ?

If those are aluminum wheels, it’s the 1st time i seen any with (steel) trim rings.

They’re injection-molded urethane…they call them “rubber wheels”, lol. They were made by Motor Wheel Corporation (the same company that made the same type of wheels for Chrysler during that era). They, like the Mopar version, had a stainless-steel trim ring that affixed to the outer edge of the rim. These are VERY hard to find iin excellent condition. They ere available on ALL AMC cars from ’75-’77 and were 14″ X 6″. They are usually missing the trim rings. They actually hold up fine, and are easy to fix up…if you have the rings and caps, that is.

Sounds like they may be similar to the honeycomb covered steel wheels avail on firebirds 1972-1976, which were actually heavier than the rally IIs.

The mid 70s Monte Carlos had a rubber wheel option too . When the Enduro craze of the 1980s started , the Monte was the car of choice for its ability to handle and take a lot of abuse- however, the rubber wheels were well known back then not to hold up the the constant left turn leaning on the banked turns. When someone showed up with rubber wheels, we knew it was only a matter of time before the right front rim broke . The stock steel wheels ,or the wider Rally wheels were what to run

My wife had one in the blue same car had the Levi’s package which was just a trim level It ran like a top the backseat was a bit complicated to get a car seat into and the doors were heavier than an elephant and when the third child came along the car just wasn’t practical for us.

We use to have 2 of these wagon types. A yellow one and a powder blue one which was like the luxury model.
Company vehicles so……..couldn’t complain. That were fairly zippy for a compact type car.
As opposed to the sedans which were the Fishbowls on wheels.
Can’t say I know what happened to them.

Amazing condition! I’m guessing the trim the seller says was “done custom” is the dark brown (or black) self-adhesive molding surrounding the wood-grain, in place of the light tan stock molding. This might have originally been a plain-sided wagon.

Yea here’s the model the nicer one we had was. This one had a 5.0 L V8
304 ci. It was a fast little car.

    Pacer D/L Limited

“Limited”: Available in 1979–1980, the Limited had leather seats, extra soundproofing, and deeper-pile carpet (18-oz. vs. the standard 12-oz) as standard, plus amenities that were otherwise options, including AM/FM radio, power door locks, power windows, and tilt steering wheel. The exterior had chrome accents, styled road wheels, and “Limited” badging.

Who ever thought leather seats were available on a Pacer. Yes they were
along with power windows & locks.

Lovely looking car. I’ve always been interested in the AMC Pacer. I’ve always liked the 1974-1977 Pacer wagon. Given its nice condition, I’d be willing to pay the $7,602 asking price, maybe more, depending on how things work.

There was a gremlin with a big block chevy in it for sale 6 months ago the thing must have felt like the space shuttle going thru the atmosphere under full throttle ! Yeah I know nothing to do with this car but it was a AMC & we don’t get to day dream about AMC’s much anymore.

Although I personally like this car, it seems like a risky choice for the flipper, unless the market for quirky disco era economy cars has heated (way) up lately…
