Nicest One Left? 1992 Isuzu Trooper

As someone who owns two Isuzu Troopers, I’m keen to see these capable off-roaders continue to appreciate. Like so many other vehicles, the first generation editions tend to rise the fastest, with each passing generation playing catch up. In the case of the Trooper, there really were only two generations of the truck, and the seller of this 1992 model estimates it’s one of the best ones left. The second-generation trucks had a major Achilles heel in the form of the GM-built 4L30E automatic transmission, which this one is equipped with, but the truck also only has 59,442 miles. Find it here on eBay where bidding is at $8,200 with no reserve.

Now, plenty of owners of these second-gen rigs have been able to maintain the automatics to a degree that they survive. Add a transmission cooler and be proactive about fluid changes will help prolong the life expectancy, but only if the previous owner has been equally as conscientious. Given the low miles and the condition on display here, it seems likely the caretakers before the current owner have been exactly that type. The Trooper has been gussied up with some mildly tacky add-ons, including aftermarket wheels I’d personally replace immediately, but smart upgrades include a three inch lift kit from an unknown manufacturer.

Really, the biggest selling point this second-generation Trooper has is being likely one of the few examples left that has been with its original owner until recently. The seller contends it was garaged that entire time, and the interior condition certainly reflects that. Now, these trucks have interiors that are fairly hard-wearing, so it’s not uncommon to see a higher mileage model still look fairly tidy inside, but this one obviously blows all those others out of the water. Plus it’s black, which seemingly shows up far less frequently than models with tan upholstery do. The air conditioning is said to work well.

The seller claims the engine shows no evidence of leaking, and that the compartment is spotless – sometimes, that’s an exaggeration, but it seems accurate here. The V6 is a snorty engine with plenty of torque, but the real hot ticket is the standard engine with the five-speed manual. This addresses the often-broken automatic and gives the Trooper some extra get-up-and-go, but those examples are harder to find that the automatic trucks. Still, you may escape the pain of the 4L30E if this one has been loved as much as the seller claims, and if you continue to preserve what looks like one of the best second-generation Troopers left.

Different license plates on the front & back –
is that for conflicting eyewitness accounts after
    a crime?

I daily drove a 1989 from new until 2004. Base model 4 cylinder five speed manual. Great trouble free vehicle. Great off road too and in snow.

Not a true survivor and too many non-stock add ons to allow it to be considered for “nicest one left” designation. Remember…they are only stock once…and stock never goes out of style nor does stock depreciate.
