No Reserve: 1974 Plymouth Barracuda

Blank canvas project cars are always good to find because it allows the new owner to let their imagination run riot. They can choose to perform a faithful restoration or to create the classic of their dreams. That is what is on offer with this 1974 Plymouth Barracuda. The original engine is long gone, so it is effectively a rolling shell. In my mind’s eye, I can picture this beauty finished in a high-impact color with a Hemi under the hood. However, you might have other ideas. If it all sounds too tempting to resist, you will find the Plymouth in Eads, Tennessee, and listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding currently sits at $4,550 in a No Reserve auction. That means that the new owner and a new life are beckoning for this Barracuda.

A lot has changed for this Barracuda since it rolled off the production line. It started life wearing Sherwood Green paint, but that is long gone. The car is a blank canvas, but it represents a fantastic starting point. Don’t be fooled by its appearance because most of the bolt-on panels are included in the sale, as is all of the glass bar the windshield. There are also bumpers, but their condition isn’t clear. The big question, in this case, is going to revolve around rust, and here things look positive. The floors and trunk pan have issues, and the best approach would be to replace these. However, the front and rear frame rails look perfect, with little more than some surface corrosion to address. Given how far the Plymouth has been dismantled, I would probably complete the process and bolt it onto a rotisserie. That would give clear access everywhere and allow the restoration of the shell to be completed to a high standard. This would extend as far as media-blasting the entire car to ensure no nasty hidden secrets could rear their ugly head in the future. The color choice would be an interesting one, but I would probably steer clear of a color like Plum Crazy from a personal perspective. I have nothing against that color. In fact, the opposite is true. However, if this car is going to stand out, it probably deserves something different. If a restomod project is the chosen path, I can’t help but think that something with pearl in it would look pretty classy.

You can see here that someone has attempted some amateur rust repairs in the past, and this is why I would replace the floors entirely. The rest of the car is too good to compromise in this area. The Plymouth rolled off the line with White interior trim, along with bucket seats and a console. Most of these parts are included in the sale, but their condition is unclear. A trim kit will probably be the most cost-effective alternative here, but once again, it will depend on the path that the buyer chooses to follow. If a restomod is the goal, the seats and other upholstered surfaces could be trimmed in something more modern, or for that touch of luxury, the buyer might choose leather. The original 318ci V8 is now gone, but the original TorqueFlite transmission and rear-end are still there. That leaves the drivetrain open to a matter of choice, so the world is the buyer’s oyster on this one. Another 318 could slot in quite nicely, but there are a multitude of other alternatives to consider. A Hemi would look pretty nice occupying the engine bay, or a later crate motor could be another alternative. Come on, let your imagination run riot. You know you want to!

Tackling someone’s half-finished project car can often be a nightmare. Someone has dismantled this 1974 Barracuda, and the buyer can see exactly what they will get for their money. This is the chance for a Mopar enthusiast to create the car of their dreams. These opportunities don’t come along every day, so someone needs to grab it with both hands. Will that someone be you?

Looks like someone’s cast-off parts car now that the project is finished.

The snow tires remind me of the recaps I used to put on my ’73 Barracuda back then, and are responsible for the car turning into dust.

A 3G Hemi would be perfect for this car, even a 5.7 would be nice. And I would have to put a pistol grip shifted 4-speed behind it. The short E body shifter. Plum crazy with a white vinyl top and interior. If you want flash… moulin rouge with a white top and interior
