No Reserve: 1979 Chevrolet C10 4×4 Pickup

Project candidates come in all shapes and sizes, with classic Pickups remaining a popular choice among enthusiasts. That makes this 1979 Chevrolet C10 4×4 worth more than a passing glance. Beneath its faded and tired paint beats a heart of gold. The seller states that it is rust-free and runs and drives extremely well, allowing the winning bidder to perform their magic as time and circumstances permit. If those factors aren’t enough to tempt you, their decision to list the C10 with No Reserve could make it affordable and irresistible. The seller has listed the Pickup here on eBay in La Pine, Oregon. Bidding sits at $3,775 as the auction heads into its final days.

Chevrolet’s Third Generation C/K Series enjoyed a long production run, gracing showroom floors from 1973 until 1991. It underwent a mid-cycle facelift in 1981, with our feature C10 pre-dating that by two years. The first owner ordered it in Cordova Brown Metallic with contrasting two-tone stripes. The vehicle looks undeniably tired, with the faded, scratched, and chipped original paint begging for a refresh. The seller is sparing with their information, but does confirm one critical fact: This beauty is completely rust-free. The photos reveal surface corrosion, but no evidence of steel penetration. There are a few bumps and bruises, especially on the upper bed edges. However, none of its shortcomings are bad enough to warrant panel replacement. The heavy-duty front bumper would be ideal for blazing a trail through the undergrowth, while the trim and glass look acceptable if the winning bidder plans a driver-grade build.

The seller’s lack of information extends to this Pickup’s mechanical specifications. The solitary engine bay shot reveals a V8, but we must guess which one it is. C10 buyers could select from the 305ci and 350ci small-blocks, although they could also choose the 400ci motor if their new purchase was a 4×4. This C10 ticks that box, which could place as much as 185hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque at the driver’s disposal. The power feeds to the road via a three-speed automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case, while the ¾-ton suspension should allow the Pickup to carry heavy loads or make effective use of its tow hitch. The seller states that the vehicle runs and drives exceptionally well, and is a turnkey proposition that can be enjoyed immediately. There are no interior images, and no information regarding how it presents. Contacting the seller would seem worthwhile, because they may be willing to supply photos and clarify this classic’s mechanical specifications.

There’s a lot to like about this 1979 Chevrolet C10 Pickup. Its 4×4 system should allow it to plunge into the wilderness effortlessly, while its lack of rust makes it tempting for anyone considering a first project build. The bidding action hasn’t been as frantic as we might typically expect, although the listing statistics suggest that things may heat up fairly soon. If they don’t, this C10 could potentially fall into the affordable category. Monitoring the auction might be worth the effort, because there is a chance that this Pickup could be a bargain buy for the right person.

Hey Stan . Yes, you’re right, the K series is the 4WD model on Chevys. If this is or was a half ton, the axles were swapped with 8 lugs from either a 3/4 or a 1 ton. They had 6 lug rims on the half ton.

Driveinstile I thought at one time the heavy half pkg had 8 lug rims. I could be totally wrong of course lol. I remember GM also offering a “light” non-HD 3/4 ton. Late 80, early 90s time frame.

Hey Stan, I did a search right here on Barnfinds. They did have the Big 10 or heavy half in a short bed. But all the ones I see are 2WD with 5 lug 15 inch rims. You could even order the 454!!! What I found online so far was they offered a higher GVW and beefier leaf springs and beefier brakes. I’ll have to keep looking. But I’m thinking they did not have the 16 inch 8 lug rims.

Hi Stan. You might be right. Was the heavy half offered on the 6 ft bed? If I’m wrong I stand corrected kind sir. I’m going to do some internet dumpster diving and see what I can find.

Either way the rims look stupid. Better off stock.

So what is this Frankenstein? The whole “Big 10” was the GVW increase to dodge the catalyst mandate. I believe 2wd was still a 5-lug wheel while K10s had a 6-lug. These wheels and chrome on lays resemble the ones Dodge used on trucks from the BR-series onward. The largest motor on a K10 could have been the 400sb as big blocks were not offered on any C/K until the 80s.

Nice. 14 bolt full-floater in the rear and a front bumper ready for a winch
