No Reserve: 1985 Ford F250 XL 4×4

Locating an affordable and seemingly straightforward project candidate can be challenging, especially if the target vehicle type is a classic Pickup. This 1985 Ford F250 XL 4×4 might be the ideal choice. Its exterior looks tired, but with no penetrating rust and a healthy V8 under the hood, its needs appear purely cosmetic. The seller’s decision to list it with No Reserve adds to its appeal. The bidding action has been healthy, but the price remains extremely modest.

The F-Series has been a staple of Ford’s model range since the end of World War II. The Seventh Generation of this icon graced showroom floors from 1980 until 1986, with this Raven Black beauty rolling off the line in 1985. The seller describes its overall appearance as presentable, admitting that the paint is thin in several spots. However, the panels are free from significant bumps and bruises, while the listing images reveal nothing beyond surface corrosion on the floors and frame. There is no evidence of penetrating rust underneath or in the exterior steel, meaning the grinder and welder are redundant in this build. The grille is missing the center badge, but the remaining trim looks acceptable for a driver-grade build. The glass is clear, and apart from the missing center caps, the factory alloy wheels should sparkle if the winning bidder invests some time into them with a high-quality polish.

We’ve reached the business end of proceedings because drivetrains often make or break classic Pickups. There appears to be nothing but good news in this case, with the seller confirming that this F250 is a turnkey proposition. The new owner receives a 351ci V8, a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and power-assisted steering and brakes. The 351 would have generated 210hp and 305 ft/lbs in 1985, making the F250 an effective off-roader or tow vehicle. It appears to wear a newer Holley carburetor, and while the engine doesn’t present well, it appears looks are deceptive. The seller confirms that the engine runs well and feels strong, the transmission shifts smoothly, and the 4×4 system works as it should. That will allow the buyer to enjoy this classic immediately as they plan their cosmetic refresh.

This Pickup’s cosmetic needs extend to its interior, which could look presentable with a slipcover fitted to the seat. This would disguise the worn and torn Gray cloth and vinyl seatcover, although I suspect the new owner might splash $320 on a replacement cover to permanently eliminate this shortcoming. The carpet should respond to a deep clean, and although the dash-pad has warped, it hasn’t developed cracks. The faux woodgrain has faded inconsistently, but those appear to be its most significant shortcomings. There are no visible aftermarket additions, with the buyer receiving cruise control and an AM radio.

There probably isn’t time to waste on this 1985 Ford F250 4×4, because the auction is rapidly heading to its conclusion. It is a turnkey proposition that its new owner could refresh as time and circumstances allow. The seller has listed the Ford here on eBay in Tacoma, Washington. Bidding sits at $3,550 with under two days left on the auction and No Reserve to hamper a successful sale. Therefore, you may need to act fast if it ticks the boxes as your next project candidate. Are you tempted? I wouldn’t blame you if you are.

Love it, but some parts I hate. pink timber panelling? That’s gotta go.
Long bed is a bonus, auto is a minus.
Correct me if I wrong it has a Windsor?
Apart from what I’ve mentioned, I’d keep the partina, slot a 4 speed in. And sadly live with a Windsor.

Yes – a 351 Windsor. Great engine but this one needs a little help based on its visual condition

I’m pretty sure those are wheel covers over steel wheels

You beat me to it. Those are just the standard steel wheels with wheel covers.

Those were everywhere on the Ford truck lineup Todd. But i think they’re a bit later offering than the 85 model year.

Solid work truck. I owned a similar rig, an ’85 F250 4×4 302 EFI and a four-speed manual. I got 20 MPG highway with the OD top gear, 14 everywhere else. It felt stronger in every situation than my Boss’ ’83 with the 351W and 3-sp auto. It was a low-budget Custom with metal “headliner” and rubber flooring. Once I caught up all the deferred maintenance it was solid, but I couldn’t keep it from rusting away. Bought it for $2400, drove it six years, sold it for $2000. Thanks for the memories, Adam!
