It’s rare these days that a car shows up for sale which seems to represent a fair opportunity all around: good for the seller, good for the buyer, and a vehicle that can either be driven as-is or improved over the years without a full-scale restoration. This 1988 Ford Mustang LX notchback coupe listed here on eBay features the preferred combination of a 5.0L V8 and 5-speed manual transmission, along with a minty interior and virtually no modifications. Bidding sits at $8,800 with no reserve.
Usually, there’s some component of a listing for a driver-quality Fox body that just doesn’t work: too many modifications, a car that’s half-torn down, an automatic transmission, or even rust concerns. Basically, a fatal flaw that doesn’t necessarily make the car a no-go, but it definitely makes for a harder sell. This particular Mustang seems to exist in that sweet spot where the flaws are mostly superficial and can be remedied with a paint correction or proper respray, along with some new front bumper trim. Otherwise, it looks incredibly solid, and underside photos in the listing reveal a spotless undercarriage.
Mileage sits at just over 86,000. Truth be told, the interior was a surprise to me. I expected that, either because it was used as a commuter car at some point in its life or because the Florida sun beat down on it, the upholstery would be in tatters or at least show more signs of wear. That’s clearly not the case here, with clean fabric, carpets, and plastics, a crack-free dash, and little evidence of neglect. The back seat appears virtually unused. The A/C still blows cold, too.
When it comes to a 5.0L-equipped Mustang, you’re almost preparing yourself for a long list of modifications, but that’s not the case here. The only tweak the seller identifies is some BBK headers. The seller reports that recent maintenance carried out includes replacement of the water pump, radiator plugs, wires, U-joints, the clutch cable, and motor mounts, which is a healthy list of concerns addressed that the next owner won’t have to worry about. Clean up the paint and trim, lower it a touch, and call it a day – that’s how I’d improve this honest notchback.
Good analysis Jeff. This is a sweet spot for Fox Mustang fans: 5.0 5-speed LX notchback in mostly stock condition, showing just routine wear and tear. Thus it becomes a good canvas for refurbishment, restoration, modification.
Other than the spot where the previous owner’s mother in law sat on the hood, it looks ok for the money.
Very cool car! Just needs a little tweaking and it’s good to go! I remember the old car magazines that would document that the LX cars were quicker than the GT cars in this set up. Very nice!
The front seats are not stock. If the car came equipped with GT seats like my 89 LX Sport, the front seats would have come with moveable thigh supports. This one has the later style 1-piece bottom cushions.

Jeff, you’re right on the assessment of a Florida car in general. However, in Florida, away from the coast, you’ll find some excellent condition cars like this Mustang. They’ve been garaged, and covered and well taken care of. My neighbor has a Grand National that looks just like it left the showroom. It’s garaged, covered, and used about once a month. Haines City, FL, is Southwest of Orlando, so it’s a good ways from the Gulf or the Atlantic. My bet is that it belongs to an older adult and has so for a long time.

One of the best sounding factory exhausts on any car far as I’m concerned. Love these LX’s.
The fox body coupe LX with the V8 and 5 speed was considered the best bang for the buck many years running. Light weight, compared to the hatchback it was a fun little car. In fact its amazing how small the fox’s look compared to the modern Mustangs.
