No Reserve Shark: 1984 BMW 633CSi Project

If you’ve been itching to experience BMW’s classic grand touring coupe without spending collector-level money, this might be your chance. Listed here on eBay, this 1984 BMW 633CSi is offered at no reserve and comes with a clean California title. Located in the Golden State, the big coupe shows 146,342 miles—though the seller notes the odometer isn’t functioning. With its 3.2-liter inline-six and automatic transmission, it does run and drive, but it’s being sold as a project that will need some attention before hitting the highway.

The E24 6-Series has long been a favorite among BMW fans for its elegant shark-nose styling and refined driving manners. This particular example wears its factory blue paint, which shows visible fading and wear, according to the seller. There are no signs of major body damage mentioned, but time has left its mark on the finish, making it a candidate for either preservation or a respray, depending on your plans. A sunroof and period-correct alloy wheels add to the classic BMW vibe, while the tires are noted to have around 30% tread left.

Inside, the tan leather interior shows typical wear for a car of this vintage, including noticeable creasing on the seats. The seller points out that it is equipped with power seats, power windows, power locks, and cruise control, though functionality isn’t guaranteed. The air conditioning does not blow cold, and while the dashboard layout remains an iconic part of BMW’s ‘80s charm, some refurbishment would likely be needed to restore the cabin to its original luxury feel.

Mechanically, the 3.2-liter M30 inline-six is one of BMW’s most robust engines, but the seller notes that it will require servicing. The car has only been “alley tested,” not taken out on public roads or run at highway speeds. It reportedly starts and drives but has some suspension issues that need addressing, and the battery will need replacement. Still, for enthusiasts willing to invest time and effort, this could be a rewarding project that brings back the full driving pleasure these cars are known for.

E24 BMWs have been steadily climbing in value as enthusiasts rediscover their blend of luxury and performance. While this 633CSi isn’t ready to be a daily driver just yet, its solid base, clean title, and classic looks make it an appealing option for anyone wanting to bring a piece of BMW’s grand touring history back to life.

Would you tackle this 6-Series as a weekend project, or would you hold out for a better-preserved example?

The current BMW design crew could learn inspiration from the designers of this era, having recently lost some of their best to Hyundai/Kia. These were some of their best designs and set the mark in the market-so much so that Ford copied the look for their 10th generation Tbird.
This one should get new shoes, paint, and mechanical-then beat the slush box with a stick shifter for maximum enjoyment.
    Good bones to start with.

I don’t think BMW understands just how bad their reputation is now. They have so value engineered their cars (cheapened parts, that it would be painful top try and keep a 10 year old one running while you can still daily drive one from the 70s and 80s.

Well I have a 2008 128i convertible which has been very reliable, runs great and still looks fresh despite being 17 years old now. These are pretty much the last of the analog BMW cars as mine does not have all the electronic crap and with a 6 speed manual and only 80K miles on the clock, it will last another 10 years easily! But I do agree that the old school cars like this 635 are a classic you can daily and keep running assuming the body is in good condition.

baltic blue, a beautiful but conservative color. automatic, slow. standard alloys, not forged. basic car with a lot of expensive repairs coming. be careful.

Doing all the repairs yourself expect to pay $2,000 for the parts to revitalize the suspension. And that is using stock or stock type parts. Not using performance/upgraded parts. When having the valve cover off to adjust the valves, always check the head bolt torque. Ans always be cognizant of any coolant loss. And always start with the HVAC controls so that by the time you are done with the engine maintenance and have rebuilt the suspension ( don’t forget the rear suspension bushings as they will be shot) the parts for the HVAC will arrive. (If needed) These are wonderful cars to drive and have that old school BMW driving sensation. I have driven many of these and if presented with a good basic car at the correct price I would not hesitate to buy one.

What suspension repairs? Not specified, bushings, struts, what? Always liked these BMWs but the stories about expensive repairs are scary.

I’d hold out for a better example. Restoring one of these can be quite expensive frankly if you can restore this car you can afford a better example. Either way you’ll have a most desirable Bimmer.

Fox owner, the ball joints (4 lower ones) tie rod ends, ALL rubber bushed parts (control arms, and the complete rear suspension and differential mounts) also because of the age most likely the driveshaft guibo clutch. The shocks on these are usually Fictal&Sachs gas units that generally go about 150,000 miles before leaking. If you are lucky enough to have Bilsteins they will last forever. Front strut mounts usually need replacement at this mileage but will be done at the same time as the front struts. The rear shock upper mounts will need attention also.
By the way, I own 3 Fox body cars. ’84 SVO, ’88 5.0LX and a ’81 Ford Durango.
Also a 1972 Audi Fox gray market car. I guess I like things called Fox.
