No Reserve Turbo: 1984 Nissan 300ZX

The Z31-era of the classic Nissan 300ZX remains one of the more accessible chapters in Nissan’s sports car history. For years, it has been stationed at the bottom of the food chain, but this appears to be changing as of late. The 300ZX was sure to eventually rise in value and appreciation by collectors, especially as younger enthusiasts began to buy their high school dream cars. This 1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo looks absolutely stunning in vibrant dark green paint and shows low mileage of just under 50,000. The Nissan is listed here on eBay with bids to $10,100 and no reserve.

The high production volume of this era of the Z car has been a driving force behind low prices. As someone who regularly frequents salvage yards, the Z31 is one of the few vintage models that will still occasionally show up as a wreck or a garage find-type salvage recovery and is the only old-school model aside from a W123-era Mercedes that will end up in a pick-and-pull in 2022. The good news is opinions seem to be shifting a bit, at least to the point that survivor-quality examples like this car are getting the bids they deserve. I love that paint job and don’t recall seeing too many Z cars from the ’80s in this shade of green.

A cloth interior awaits the next owner, which is a change of pace from the usual leather interior we see in the higher-end models like this one, which are usually the turbocharged cars or some sort of an anniversary special. It wasn’t a forgone conclusion that this grand tourer would come with a stick, so it’s great to see the combination of three pedals and the turbo powerplant. The car looks every bit as original as its low mileage would suggest, and it’s clear a previous owner took great pains to keep the cosmetics in excellent shape. Just look at the steering wheel – no signs of grubby fingerprints here.

The seller claims this is a lifelong California car with just one owner. The Z31 was one of those cars that collectors seem to gravitate to, absolutely convinced that putting one in the garage and barely driving it was the key to automotive riches. Of course, that didn’t work out, but the tides are definitely starting to turn to the point where an exceptionally nice Z of this generation will not be a cheap buy. With sharp colors and the right drivetrain configuration, and an amazing vanity plate, it seems likely this 300ZX will move on to owner number two very soon.

Hate to break it to you, Jeff, but guys who daydreamed about a new, 1984 300ZX in high school are over 50 now, so “younger enthusiasts,” not so much.

I always picture these driven by guys who still wore gold chains and polyester leisure suits with white belts and shirts open to the navel.

This is a beauty! Love the color. Don’t know if I’ve ever wanted one enough to buy one but I’ve always like them – probably because these were new when I was in high achool.

I had a 1987 SE. It was wicked fun to drive. And Snappy. Hug the road like nobody`s business. They used to call them the Japanese Corvette.

Back in the day my uncle had a red ‘86 Z, non turbo 5 speed. He always said it was one of the best cars he ever had.

Of all the Z cars I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot of them in my day, I don’t recall ever seeing a green one. Good luck to the seller and new owner. And, yes, a manual is the way to go!

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a 300Z in green, and I think I’d remember one as striking as this.
Is anyone else blown away by the thought of this car being 2 years shy of 40 years old? I know I am.

Not sure why the seller says 49,000 miles. That odometer clearly says 79,000 in the photos. At least that’s what I see.

Joe, this is a Canadian vehicle so the odometer is in Kilometers not miles. He says in the ebay add that the 79K in kilometers equals out to about 49,000 miles.

Nice car but looking at the interior photos on the eBay listing, I swear the odometer shows 79k not 49k miles. Still in great shape though!

    Nice car.

It has spent time in Ontario Canada (which is why the mileage is in kms). This sparks the question, was it winter driven? Some underneath photos should be requested prior to bidding.

Yes, an explanation of its Canadian history would be nice!

There’s a problem here folks. The mileage shows to be 50K BUT the actual mileage in 1988 and 2000 was over 79,000. Better check it out before you bid

The off center odometer is raising my eybrow, kinda like when I told my wife she painted her eybrows on too high…she seemed surprised.

Don’t know where Ontario came from or the other mileage claims but I did a VIN search and found nothing other than what the owner claims. The mileage is in kilometers and if you look at the speedometer the dominant numbers are in kilometers and MPH are the smaller numbers.

If you look at the vehicle history report you would see it was registered in Ontario, Canada at one time. That is where the claim came from.

If I could post a picture I would show you that the over 79,000 miles was from the DMV IN California.

So, apparently someone at Cali DMV neglected to check the “metric” box or convert KM to miles when inputting the mileage/KM.
There is a Canadian sticker on the door frame, and the speedometer is clearly set up with KM as the primary measure, mph in small numbers below. I am not going to conclude the seller is lying and the odometer is based on miles when other indications are the car is a Canadian origin car with KM speedo and odometer.

Dad had a 280Z when I was in high school. Loved driving it when he’d let me. I do remember the key falling out and the gas gauge not working. This looks like a premium specimen.

    Beauty!
I had the non-turbo digital dash version of this, and it is one of my favorite cars over the years. I also later had an 87, and used it for my “company car” for a number of years.
It seems to me that my 84 was a Datsun, and they did not become Nissan until 85. Amirite?
I see this one plainly has Nissan on the engine and nameplate, etc, and manufactured in march 1984!
    Thanks,
    Rich
