Not Mary Kay: 1989 Cadillac Eldorado

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

I’m generally not one to shy away from a pink shirt, a pink tie, a pink panther, or a pink car. I’m confident enough to not care what anyone else thinks about my wardrobe or my vehicles – that is if it’s negative, we all like to hear positive things. It’s hard to not notice or talk about the pinkness of this 1989 Cadillac Eldorado: it’s pink. Really pink. Pepto pink more so than Mary Kay pink. It’s posted on Craigslist and it can be found here if the listing goes away. It’s located in the Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey area with an asking price of $4,500 or best offer. Thanks to Bill W. for sending in this one!

So, what we know so far, it isn’t a Mary Kay car. For you trivia buffs, in the late-1960s, Mary Kay Ash walked into a Lincoln dealership and asked about getting a new Lincoln painted in her cosmetic company’s “Mountain Laurel” hue to promote her new business. The Lincoln dealer basically shooed her off, telling her to come back with her husband and then they would talk about it. Tsk-tsk.. bad move, Lincoln dealer. She went to a Cadillac dealer and they were on board instantly and those cars became a powerful symbol, marketing tool, and incentive for Mary Kay Cosmetics. So after all of that and this isn’t even a Mary Kay car. I just thought that some of you would be interested in that, and don’t tell me that a lot of you don’t watch Jeopardy and shout out the answers! We all like to learn something new, even if it’s about a makeup millionaire.

So, what is the deal with this pink paint? The seller says that this “car was painted by Nacht Cadillac englewood cliffs in Pink as promotion.” For what reason I don’t have a clue and they aren’t saying. You can see that there are chips in it, mainly on the flexible parts. I’m assuming that the next owner will repaint the car in its original color or another color, anything but pink.

There are no engine photos as per US law with Craigslist ads (kidding, but it seems that way), but it should have Cadillac’s 4.5L 273 cubic-inch V8 with 155 hp. The seller says that it “Runs and drives great everything works.” I can see a couple of rips on the driver’s seat. I’m guessing that this was originally a maroon colored Eldorado? Who knows, maybe the engine or a trunk photo would have shown the original color. Any thoughts on this pink Cadillac?

Perhaps the dealer who added the pink hue was a fan of Bruce Springsteen?

For those of you who are not older than history, itself, car dealers would often arrange for vehicles to be repainted to meet a customer’s requirements.

I once owned a ’40 Buick Super coupe that appeared to have been resprayed a non-standard blue before delivery. So many parts had been removed to do the job that it looked like it had left the factory in the colour it was when I bought it in 1974.

It wasn’t until I removed the exterior window trim (which had no overspray on them!) that the original black paint was found! Needless to say, it surprised a lot of my experienced car restoration buddies.

I have no issue wearing a Pink shirt, or Pink tie, or Pink socks. Nor would I usually have a concern about driving a Pink car. Tho my fondness for Pink cars ends sometime in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The Pink on this Eldo just doesn’t work. It needs to be toned down a notch or two!

I don’t think the roof/continental tire colour compliments the pink; white would be a softer contrast to the pink, and look more “classic”…. using that term loosely of course.

The ONLY reason I am posting here is to get what I hope to be some really fun comments on this rather PINK car! Come on people, rev up those great senses of humor and let it fly. I can hardly wait…….. ( where is Liberace now that we need him?)

I love it, love the instant hate most people feel towards it.

The only things it needs are ash trays full of caviar, a chandelier hanging from the mirror and a Prince lookalike band driving it.

The Mary Kay hue is certainly lighter. High-producing members of the MK sales force are still getting the Cadillacs too! Just a couple of weeks ago, I was in a high-end specialty body shop (does not work with the public) and saw more than half a dozen in various states of being turned pink.

What astounded me was the totality of the color change. The cars were stripped far beyond what I would have expected, including removal of all glass and interior bits. Each car was pulled down nearly to the unibody! Beatnik Bedouin, other than the information available through the VIN, tearing one down wouldn’t be a good way to find evidence of original color.

That had me wondering just how much over the cost of the original car (Not Cheap!) Mary Kay spends on keeping that part of the brand’s image alive? The kind of paint job being done there just has to cost $20K or more.

This car? Meh. Maaco it. I am surprised that no one has mentioned the $$$ real wire wheels, though.

The” wire wheels” are really hubcaps.

@Alan – your post makes me wonder why MK doesn’t just work out a custom-order deal with GM. It seems to me that would have to be cheaper than disassembling completed cars.

I have no answer for that. I would guess that using a special paint color for a short run of vehicles is nearly impossible at the production level. As far as I know, paint is now all applied robotically.

One The all time favorite cars that I ever owned was a 1957 Cadillac short four door hardtop that was original paint pale pink w/ a soft black top. We called it Dolly P***** for the obvious reasons. Pulled up to a stop sign to allow two senior ladies to cross in front of us, and we could read lips– “My god, its pink”.

pink cadillac: song, band title & this.
Looks OK 2 me (would never own a vehicle this color tho)
    No jokes needed,
what’s the deal w/the pink cars tho? I see all sorts of models. Only 1 had the Mary K badge (2, 3 inches) on it. One’s even parked in front of her pink house (Northampton, MA – where else would U expect).

Definitely NOT a Mary Kay. Theirs were a very pale pink to go with their signature color, almost a milky shade of soft pink. Whoever did this must have had a passion for Pepto Bismal. My mom and dad had a great phrase they’d say: That would gag a maggot.

Not a pink fan but oddly enough I could live with this except the the roof. It isn’t bad but for me it would need a different shade maybe. Yes I’m weird.

This car was parked in Redhook, Brooklyn two days ago! Seems to only have one whitewall tire on it now, but aside from that looks as-pictured. Must belong to the last pimp left in Redhook!

I saw this car on the road in NYC and my girlfriend googled 1988 El Dorado Mary Kay (she was trying to find out if this was a Mary Kay car) and stumbled onto this article. The car now has spokes that stick out about six inches but the stickers are all still on it.
