Numbers-Matching 396/4-Speed: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

If you’ve been on the hunt for some early seventies Chevrolet muscle, this 1970 Chevelle Super Sport here on Craigslist seems to check several of the right boxes and the seller boasts that he’s got it priced at under-market value, so if you didn’t find the desired gifts under your tree maybe this one would make a fun present to buy just for yourself.  The Chevy is by the seaside in Lido Beach, New York, and comes with an asking price of $49,999.  Tony Primo, thanks again for this and all of your other great tips, please keep them coming!

The Chevelle received an updated body for ’70, which still looked great with the retained quad headlights up front but the previous styling scored high outside as well, so I’d have a hard time picking a favorite year model simply based on looks.  But they all work well with pitch-dark paint, and the seller says that around 50% of the Tuxedo Black finish here is original, although he doesn’t specify which panels have gotten a respray.  That’s also the original vinyl roof we’re seeing on top, still showing a lot better than I’d expect for it to now be 50-plus years old.

Equally as well-preserved is the interior, also claimed to be original, and if that’s the case seems to be a fine testament to the level of care this car must have received throughout its lifespan.  The armrest on the driver’s side is sagging a bit, but from what I can tell almost everything else inside there seems A-OK, and I like how the black and white combo in there compliments the same exterior colors.

It would be better to find one of the new for the 1970 model 454 monsters under the hood, but I’m not complaining about the 350 horsepower L34 396 either, especially since it’s matched up with a 4-speed manual transmission.  Both are stated to be the numbers-matching components, and while there’s no word on whether or not either has ever gotten a rebuild the engine compartment looks to be in excellent order, with a set of headers and cowl-induction hood adding even more to the cool factor.

When combined, a trio of photos from the down below show most of the platform, which appears solid all the way around with the seller confirming the 12-bolt rear-end is also original.  That’s a nice exhaust system too with a cross pipe in-between, and I’m imagining hearing a very nice rumble coming out the back.  I’m always up for negotiating, but in my mind, fifty grand doesn’t seem unreasonable for what we’re seeing here.  What do you think?

I wonder how much better it would look

The white top is the only reason I even clicked on the listing. It stands out from all the other Chevelles in solid Basic Black, Standard Silver or Requisite Red.

Posting gone. Ugly with white top. All they do is cause rust. The more you washed a 70s car with a vinyl top, the more damage you did. Most useless option EVER.

The white top makes it rather unique and maybe while not as appealing as the black it does go with the striping and interior, nice to see something different Original? I would have npo problem driving it!

454 LS in a ’70 Chevelle SS would get 6 mpg, without all four barrels open. My ’71 402 SS would get 11 mpg at best, gas was 0.66 cents a gallon and I couldn’t afford to drive it daily…but it was fun for the one year I owned it!
