Numbers Matching, Mostly Original: 1971 Corvette LT-1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

What a gorgeous C3! This 1971 Corvette is still featuring “most” of its original paint and appears to be in either great driver condition (my choice) or a foundation for a show car in the preservation classes. It’s listed for sale here on eBay where bidding is over $26,000 and any reserve has been met. It’s located in Newport, North Carolina. I almost wish it were further away; it would be less tempting.

The seller purchased the car about a year ago with the intent to show it. It is pretty much original with the exception of the carpet — the removed carpet is also included with the sale — and includes, yes, a luggage rack. Sigh.

The seller reports slight wear and blemishes to the luggage rack and exhaust bezel chrome as you might expect on a 47 year old car. I would like it so much better without the rack. Oh well.

There is one bead that is worn on the seats, but other than that both look really nice. The seller describes the door panels as being quite worn, but new parts are included if you want to replace them. The original Muncie close-ratio four-speed is present as well. The only thing not working right now is the clock, but the seller has a receipt from where it was previously repaired, so hopefully it’s nothing major.

Needless to say, the heart of any Corvette is the V8 engine, and this one is an 350 cubic inch LT-1 rated at 330 horsepower. We’re told “it runs very good,” and with a little over 66,000 miles and having been overhauled, it should run well. The exhaust system has been replaced in the past, and I’m sure it’s a pretty sound when you wind up the LT-1. Is that something you’d like to be doing? I know I would!

The luggage rack question? With it or without it I’d love to have this fine car.

I have never seen a Corvette with a luggage rack that had anything strapped to it such as luggage.

I thought the luggage rack was to strap the t-tops to? Is this not true?

My brother had a brown (!) 75 stingray (ugh) with a Brown interior and luggage rack. I think he paid ~$3k for it in 1986 or so. He stored the t tops in the area behind the seats. The car was really “transormed” when he rebuilt the turd of a stock 350, boring it .030, flat top pistons to increase the CR, balanced, older 461 “camel hump” heads that had 2.02 valves installed, a comp 268H cam, edelbrock performer aluminum intake, tweaked q jet carb and different weights and springs in the hei dist. (No headers as it would already cook your feet on long drives.) I would swear it had twice the horsepower as stock. He painted the intake orange so it looked stock when the hood was opened. We stripped the old brown paint off (two coats) by hand with chemical stripper, (seemed to take FOREVER) and he installed fiberglass nose and rear that looked like the later cars. He also had it painted in the 78 pace car style, but gold and black. He also installed a set of 78 style aluminum wheels off a later vette. Turned out to be a prety decent car but he was having to work on it all the time. (Upgrade brakes to stainless, new rear springs replaced all the u joints IRS.) One time he hit a racoon in the road and knocked the whole driver front fender out behind the wheel. Another time he lost it on a curve and a metal reflector post took out the whole passenger door skin. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when he was parked in the street at a friend’s and there was a party down the street. A guy at the party had a new c4 and saw my brother arrive, challenged him to a race but he resfused since guy was obviously drunk. Later when he was leaving there showing off, lost it hit my brother’s vette and took out the whole driver side (Pass side if the C4) he said there was pieces in the street for a block. He said he never saw so much busted fiberglass in his life. He got it fixed (other guy had insurance at the time but probably not after!) and sold it immediately.

Perhaps this will end the Corvette luggage rack wise comments. When used as intended, you can’t see them.

I used the one on my ’70 convertible to hold camping gear. Worked great and they add a great look to the car, despite the naysayers.

A friend had a red one with black interior. I autocrossed it with him for a season; great handling car, and very fun to drive. Yes, it was fast! The LT-1 was awesome. The hot setup was, believe it or not, Mickey Thompson tires, in an era when BFG pretty much ruled. We missed out on a divisional championship with the car, due to the unfortunate selection of a set of “special” brake pads. They faded so quickly and completely that the pedal would go to the floor! :-(

I haven’t thought about Dan and his Corvette for quite a while. Now I am wondering if he and maybe the car, are still around?
