OBS Eddie Bauer: 1996 Ford F-150 XLT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Just a few days ago, we featured the first Eddie Bauer edition Ford F-150 pickup I had seen in years. Now, here we are again, with another one that’s in similar condition with some huge miles on the clock but still presenting fairly well. The inline-six in these trucks is quite durable and this one is paired to a 5-speed manual, making it quite literally one of the most un-killable pickup trucks ever made. The Eddie Bauer-spec colors make a rugged workhorse mildly handsome, and given it needs some work, one would hope the truck’s reserve price is reasonable. Find it here on eBay with bids to $2,250 and the reserve unmet.

The configuration of this F-150 is downright perfect, with the short bed, 2WD, and beefy wheels and tires (although the cockeyed front bumper is distracting). I realize that for many of you, a 4WD truck is preferred, but so long as a rear wheel drive rig is sitting on rubber that makes it look the part, I’m OK with the reduced weight and complexity. The photos show that the Ford is rust-free and the seller confirms that it led a quiet existence as a government-owned fire chief’s vehicle for many years. The F-150 is located in Florida, which is presumably where it has been for some time based on the clean condition.

The Eddie Bauer Ford Explorers and Bronco / Bronco IIs usually got some nice upgrades inside the rig, including leather seating surfaces and power seats. The F-150s seemed to have been excluded from that automatic upgrade, as the ones we’ve seen have all had cloth interiors. That probably makes the most sense considering at the time, the concept of a luxury pickup still seemed laughable; nowadays, not so much. The cloth surfaces appear to be largely clean despite this truck being used as a daily, but government-owned rigs typically get regular washings/cleanings as part of their stewardship of the state.

The seller notes that while the overbuilt inline-six doesn’t overheat and runs down the road just fine, it will still likely need some attention due to faults like a rough idle. These are more annoyances that big issues at this point, but it still serves as a reminder that the F-150 has nearly 250,000 miles on the clock. Pointing to the durability of the engine, the listing highlights that the 5-speed manual has been rebuilt but the engine presumably remains untouched. Fingers crossed the seller isn’t looking for more than $5K as a Buy-It-Now, as this final year OBS Eddie Bauer edition deserves preserving.

Don’t see dual exhaust on the 300 too often.

I’m sure with the high mileage, there will be other areas to address beyond the rough idle, the cockeyed front bumper (and the green radiator mount body member?). That said, these Eddie Bauer F-150’s were sharp rigs. Short wheelbase, burgundy with the tan trim, and the tire/wheel package works great. With the 300 six and a 5-speed, it will run forever.

Ford sold tons of these specific 150s: Eddie Bauer short beds, 6 and a stick, in order to improve the dreaded CAFE ratings. They offered a screaming great financing on these trucks only. No V8’s, no automatics, just pick a color and take it or leave it.

I could use the back bumper. That’s all I need for mine. Being here in Ohio all you can find at the salvage yards are bent and rusty ones. There doesn’t seem to be any NOS ones left. On second look it has a dent in it too. Dang!

I’d love to have this truck but I’m a little nervous with 250,000 miles and if you look at engine compartment shot the edge of the left fender is green and the radiator bracket which tells me this truck was hit on the left front.
Maybe there isn’t any frame damage and maybe there is.
It’s a gamble. If I had a decent place to work on it I’d probably take a chance but I don’t.

Can tell the bumper is misaligned too.

Too bad it is in Florida. This is one I would definitely take a close look at. Perfect run around/chore and cars and coffee ride.

Dang I should have held out… I sold my 96 with 220k miles on it just as clean for $1,600 bucks my opinion is the current bid is higher than actual value just because of the mileage

Helps me put my 93 f150 in perspective. Standard cab short bed like this one. And basically rust free like this one except with surface rust underneath though nothing in bad shape there. Mine also had a bit more patina but with solid cab corners and wheel arches. Also has a nice running 302 w/auto & a posi out back.
It’s a fixer upper as I go model. Great to read some of the comments here, always good for thought.
I wonder what they are hoping for in reserve. 11k? Bodes well for me but doesn’t look like the are in that ballpark now with 4 hrs to go and only bid to 3k+.
    Hmmm

I’ve got a ’93 F150 long bed with the big 4.9 L 6 and automatic. I bought it 13 years ago for $750. It’s now got 280,000 miles on it and other than a recent oil leak that I haven’t traced still starts right up and runs great. I believe ot had about 150,000 miles when I bought it. And living in NV and AZ it’s entire life, there is no rust. You just can’t kill ’em.
