Old Mopar Smell: 1969 Plymouth Road Runner

1969 Plymouth Road Runner

Since I was a kid, I’ve wanted a Road Runner. There was one parked in front of an old trailer house that I lusted after for many years. After getting enough courage to go knock on the door, I was promptly told that it was not for sale. They were going to restore it one day, of course! Within a year or so, the car disappeared, but my desire for one of these bare bones muscle cars never ceased. Current values will probably keep that dream just out of reach, but this one found here on eBay gives me hope. It is a 383/4-speed car without much else in the way of options – just the way I’d want mine. The engine was rebuilt and is is currently out of the car. I’d be seriously tempted to drop the engine back in and leave the rest pretty much as-is. Sure, you’d want to treat any rust and make it safe, but these were meant to be driven and that is just what I’d do. Beep! Beep!

would love to put the engine back in it and drive it as is for what is left of the summer and into early fall. It came from the factory with a bench, would search for a replacement .. for the winter project would do the necessary body work and a repaint in the original color ..little bit of this, a little bit of that… it looks good to go as is.. I loved the 68 & 69 RR

Anthony: while you would fix the 1/4 rot check the rear window. I would take out the rear window and fix the rot there first.

I agree with the crowd: make it a driver. I have loved these cars since I saw my first Roadrunner in the early 1970s (owned by Mr Thomas, a teacher in Newtown Middle School), which was nearly identical to this car. This website brings so many memories.

That is one sweet ride! I would immediately spray all the nooks and crannys with OSPHO to stop the rot. You will likely find a lot more when the F/R glass is removed and backsides of some of the panels. But all in all that is a cherry car. Rare to find one that complete and original. Be very tempting to just clean it up, mechanical restore and leave original finishes. Of course,, my favorites of these were the ones painted Purple with black accents and doing my own body and paint, thats the direction i would want to go. My wife has a 69 Chevelle Malibu, Nothing exotic, but a period hot rod like what we grew up with. We are still arguing over the color. Would have the same issue on this car. Original or restified? With Mopars getting the coin they are, probably should keep it original.

Beep Beep!!! Thanks Barn finds! I’m the new owner of this RR cause of you. I’ve taken a survey among friends , and yep, just like your readers suggested, I’m going to get this bird flying ASAP for the rest of summer and fall before she goes into the shop for repairs and possibly rotisserie.
Thanks again BF and your dedicated BF readers.

Unfortunately, it still sitting in my garage without being completed. Sourcing matching number OE parts to keep this matching number car correct has been an experience, BUT i almost have every thing i need. I’m hoping to receive the last few things I need in the next 2-3 weeks. And then I will start posting some pictures. Thanks for checking in on me!

A friend of mine in high school had a non runner exactly like this. Wonder if it’s the same one.
