One Family Polara: 1964 Dodge Polara 500 Convertible

This 1964 Dodge Polara has always been owned by the one family and judging by the dust that has accumulated on it, it has been sitting in storage for quite some time. It is now looking for a new home to go to. You will find it listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Long Beach, California, it is being offered for sale with a clean title. The price on this Polara has been set at $18,500, but the seller is willing to consider offers.

There’s certainly a pretty decent layer of dust that has accumulated on the Polara, but the overall condition looks to be quite good. There are no visible signs of rust on the car, and the seller does claim that the body and paint are good. The soft-top looks to be in good condition, although it is hard to tell what condition the rear window is in due to the amount of dust. Still, these aren’t a big deal to have replaced. The one thing that I would change if I owned the car would be the wheels, but that is personal taste.

The overall condition of the interior also looks to be quite good, and a few hours with some cleaning products would make a world of difference. The only issues that I can see relate to the driver’s seat and the carpet. There is a rag on the seat, and I’d like to know if the seat upholstery is intact under that. The carpet is really dirty, and I’m not convinced that it will respond to cleaning, so it may need to be replaced. There is also some strange staining of the carpet under the pedals which seems to suggest that there has been some kind of fluid leak in that area, so this would need to be investigated.

The 1964 Polara was available with a number of different engines, and this one is the 383ci V8 which produced 305hp and is backed by an automatic transmission. The seller states that the car runs well, but gives no indication as to how well, or even whether, the car drives. I am wondering whether the previously mentioned mark on the carpet may be leaking brake fluid, so that will also need to be checked. Depending on how long the car has been dormant, there may be a few items that will need to be checked, serviced or replaced.

If this 1964 Polara 500 Convertible is as solid as the seller claims, then it may be a fairly straight-forward job to get it back onto the road. If that is the case, then it would be a nice car to work on over Winter with a view to enjoying the car once the warm weather hits. With decent and unrestored examples starting at around $22,000, this is a car with potential.

Ouch. Dang. I remember the time, place, and speed (75) where our ’64 wagon ran out of it’s 50,000 mile warranty. It went another 135,000 miles before being traded in for a new Datsun 510 wagon.

Still miss it. Oh yeah. And the “Seven for a dollar” hamburgers.

Hard to tell but it looks like there’s rust coming through on the rear wheelwells. I like the car but no room to even consider something like this one. I have to think body parts would be hard to find for this one.

It looks like there is water damage in the drivers side trunk area. I just dont get it. I’m assuming this is a flipper. Just my personal pride would make me clean the car up and have it look this best it could. There is no way that pictures as found would make me pay more money for a car than would a neat presentation. You can show me the ‘as found’ pix when I look at your cleaned up car! Sheesh……

Like it and think it will clean up nicely…spend some time in the trunk/prime/paint, new carpet/seat repair, steel wheels/wheel covers.

If it were red on red it could have been Ms Hathaway’s car. Also made me think of my grandmother’s white 64 4 door Polara.

I used to own a 64 Polara Hardtop. Loved the car!!! Wish I never sold it. 318 Poly block with pushbutton transmission. Man I miss that car.

My brother had its cousin: a ’64 Plymouth Belvedere hardtop. 318 poly and pushbutton as well. A blast to drive.

I agree, if the seller is lazy there are always detailing guys available! Why sell it like that, ( it’s not that he’s giving it away).

And NADA says nice examples go for 28 grand.

I like it but why offer it like this ?

Oh well he is so uninterested that someone should be able to get it cheap

With Hagerty placing prices for Fair at $13k and Good at $19k, seems overpriced. I’m very familiar with those carpet stains, and I’d put money on it being brake fluid. So, considering it probably needs: master cylinder, brake lines & brakes, gas tank flush & seal and fuel lines, rubber window seals and back window, carpet, hoses and belts, possibly tires, gaskets and whatever may be needed from mice damage, I’d top out about 8 grand, then walk away. As for the year and model itself, I’ve always liked the looks of these, but I like different and unusual cars.

“When the top goes down, the price goes up!” Solid body, side marker reflectors straight out of Pep Boys circa 1969. Front seats are recovered, but reproduction upholstery is available. Don’t know what’s up with that motor – it has a four barrel on it, but the block looks like it’s painted red or orange, and valve covers are blue – nothing is turquoise like it should be. Need to see the tag to determine if it’s a legit 383 4bbl car; could be a dressed up 361.
That said, the ’64 Polara is one of my B-Body Bucket List cars, along with the ’62 Polara 500 (in red, please) and the ’66 Coronet 500 (gold with black buckets, to match my Dad’s)

This year is a huge improvement over the 63s. I always thought the front looked a bit odd. The seller should at least clean it up if he or she wants that kind of money.

I have a 4 door sedan version of this, the one place they do rust is under the vent area in the cowl, at least this one has a floor shift and not that push button control which in reality might have been great when new but after the years have gone by they become hard and the buttons fall off. I would think 6 to 7 grand would be the number for this car because as one writer here said there will be a lot to do in order to get it road worthy.

Did they make a 500 in 1964 ? Had one or two but not a 500…..Mopar was always playing around with that top end model……….

They think the buyer will think it is worth 18K but they don’t think it is worth a wash.

    Something is off there.

Car is way overpriced for what it is.18,500 is way off the mark. Personally I never care what the blue book is not going to let a book or auctioneer TRY to convince me what a car is worth. When sellers start talking about blue book value my mind starts thinking next. It’s not that I don’t have the buck it’s just that I won’t get screwed.
