After Mustang sales quickly peaked in 1966, Ford was looking to inject new magic into the car by 1969. Competition entered the field in 1967-68 and helped to erode demand. The result was the introduction of the performance-driven Mach 1 with a 351 cubic inch V8 as standard equipment, This Mach 1 is thought to be a one-owner car that’s been off the road for 47 years at under 40,000 miles. It’s a rescue that hasn’t been cleaned up nor do we know if it runs. Located now in Hillsboro, Ohio, this Ford is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $32,000. This tip is brought to us by Barn Finder “Ted”!
When you ordered a Mach 1 in ‘69, it only came in one body style, the fastback, which Ford was now marketing as the “SportsRoof”. Though an option, the cars could be identified with their own body code on the data plate affixed to the driver’s side door. The car looked the role, with a flat black hood held down by pins, a scoop that could be made functional, a beefed-up suspension, and lots of other goodies. While the 351 was standard, it began with a 2-barrel carburetor that could be upgraded or a 428 Cobra Jet could be specified if this weren’t enough. Mach 1 sales would comprise up to 25% of Mustang production, but overall deliveries for the car continued to decline through 1973.
As the story goes, this car was retired from regular duty after eight years (1977) and the low mileage is said to be correct though the seller is vague as to whether there was ever more than one owner involved. Some aftermarket add-ons have been done to the V8, but the seller doesn’t specify what they are. The wheels aren’t stock either.
The seller has a Marti Report which pegs this Ford as 1 of 918 due to the burgundy paint (which is original) and the matching interior, rather than black which was more common. The car also has a 4-speed manual, a plus over an automatic transmission which may have been ordered more frequently. It’s too bad that the seller doesn’t say anything about the running status of the Mustang or whether the engine is stuck. That would help support the seller’s asking price.
My favourite year for the Stang, well 69/70.
But way over priced, yah it’s a Mack 1, but unknown running condition.
If this car could talk I bet there are some stories
Mack?
“Some aftermarket add-ons have been done to the V8, but the seller doesn’t specify what they are.”
I would start with the air cleaner, valve covers and distributor…
Pretty minor stuff given how original the car is.
The absence of a shifter peaks my “is there even a transmission “ in there curiosity
Compared to that gorgeous 428CJ car in Vancouver, this one looks like a basket case. That the seller doesn’t even know if the engine turns is a huge red flag. This does look like the real deal but given how much work needs to be done, I’m not sure I would pay even half the asking price for this.
The Mustang I feel in love with was my first husbands. He had mowed lawn’s one summer and bought it for $1,500 used. It was a 1968 2+2 Fastback with the original canary yellow paint … It was board over 30 and could only handle a 4 11 rear end. It only hand a 3 speed 6 cylinder that raced like a Cobra roadster…
Gregory I am glad you also noticed no shifter I thought it was just me!
This could be a nice project car but not at 32k for the condition it’s in.
My neighbor had a 69 Mach 1 with 390 4 speed headers and a lumpy cam I loved that car his sister had a 65 2+2 k code 289 father had a 35 ford flatter with offenhauser heads and headers they were a ford family!!
Sweet….
This would be an easy restoration, we just completed a ’69 and about to start a ’70. The price is a bit of a reach, however for someone really wanting one of these, it’s not outrageous. Would an asking price of 5k or 6k on the high side deter you if you love these cars? Also this is a great car if you like maroon, you don’t often find them with that color interior.
Every part for these cars are so readily available and inexpensive that you can end up with a beautiful product at a comparatively reasonable expenditure.
My only nag about the listing…the car is sitting on a lift, why not some underside pictures?
Ask is very high for a 351 two barrel car / open rear end / low to no option car and rust. It is in “as flipped” condition. The original owner stated trans is in the trunk.
Yes! Worth about half the ask!
