One-Owner Project: 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

General Motors treated all of its A-body intermediates to a redesign in 1968. Perhaps the best-looking of the lot was the mid-size Chevy Chevelle, which was entering its fifth year. The seller’s ’68 Malibu Sport Coupe is a one-owner auto that was last on the road in 1991. It has a previously rebuilt engine and an ample amount of rust, dents, and dings. Needing a restoration, this non-SS Chevy can be found in Loveland, Colorado, and is available here on craigslist for $10,000 or make an offer. A salute goes to “Zappenduster” for another vintage tip!

Chevrolet had a good year in 1968, selling 464,700 Chevelles (if you include the El Camino, which was considered part of the mix). Nearly 40% of production went to the Malibu Sport Coupe with a V8 engine, and that excludes the SS 396, which was still a separate series. So, these cars were everywhere and are popular today as SS clone candidates (1969 and beyond, because they’re harder to prove).

This 1968 Malibu hasn’t changed hands since the original title was issued 57 years ago. The odometer reads just shy of 89,000 miles, and the 327 cubic inch engine was rebuilt ages ago. The car hasn’t been driven for 34 years. No mention is made of running condition, so we assume things are dead under the hood. An automatic transmission is paired with the 327, and a 2-speed Powerglide would be a good guess.

From every angle of the car, you’ll find corrosion (from a little to a lot) and an assortment of dents and dings. So, the body shop will be licking its chops over this one. Surprisingly, the interior is nice except for a missing door panel. The upholstery was redone at some point, and the apparent car cover kept out the sunlight (and damage). This appears to be a major project, so the asking price is ambitious since it was never a Super Sport.

This is unreal. I saw it on Fast Finds and had to take a double take. Back in the mid 80’s, my Dad had a friend that had a ’68 Chevelle exactly like this. Same wheel covers same color. All except he had a 307 in it. ( I think). Even condition wise it looked just like this. They worked in construction. He’d pull up, people would see him. He’d get out, pat the roof and say, “Just 3 more payments and this baby is MINE!!!”.

If it has not been run for 30 plus years was it pushed on the street for the photos.

Got married in 1970, in a 68 Red Malibu like this. 307, 4 on the floor. Great car, was teaching on Arizona reservation. Plastic dash always rattled. But run like a moonshiner. Good times

It doesn’t look rusty, more like it was parked in carport or under some partial cover with the rear end exposed.

Even though I had a ’67 SS396 CHEVELLE I prefer this body style. This could make a nice project for someone not named Wayne!

My buddy had the identical car with a 327 / 4 speed bench seat. IIRC, he paid $200 for it in 1975

The one owner didn’t take care of the car.

I could go for something like this one, I really like the 68. From the pictures the body really doesn’t look bad but obviously an in person inspection is needed, the price is way too high in my opinion, but it clearly wasn’t for someone being the add is gone.

My 64 Chevy Bel Air is from Colorado Springs , Colorado it was in the same condition as this car but my interior needed only new carpet ,package tray and a good cleaning. The frame on this car should be rust free , I’d pull the motor get it rebuilt, detail the engine compartment and get the car painted then take care of the interior. My bel air was so clean underneath we reprayed the original colors ermine white roof , meadow green body, rebuilt the 283 and detailed the engine I’d love to have this car it would be beautiful!
