The original owner of this 1968 Firebird Convertible has partially dismantled it, and now the project has stalled. He has decided to sell it, and you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Annandale, Virginia, it is offered for sale with a clear title. Bidding for the Firebird opened at $100, and at the time of writing it had reached $3,650.
The seller is not forthcoming about the condition of the body and frame of the Firebird, and the photos are also inconclusive. What is visible seems to be fairly short on rust issues, although there is a reasonable dent in the driver’s door. The car has been stored in a garage, and if it is the one that the photos were taken in, then storage conditions have been pretty good. This gives some cause for optimism regarding the car’s condition. While it is partially dismantled, the seller seems to be quite confident that all of the components are present.
The interior of the Firebird also looks to be virtually complete. The factory radio is missing from the dash but otherwise it looks okay. The seller says that the car smells musty, but the interior upholstery and components look to be free of rips or tears. To me, it looks like the interior will revive quite well with a simple clean.
The Firebird was originally the home of a 350ci 2bbl engine which was backed by a Powerglide transmission. The original engine is gone, but the Powerglide remains. The seller is also including a GM350 automatic transmission in the deal. In case you feel like you’re missing out in the engine department, this isn’t entirely true. Included is a 1974 350ci short-block that has been bored 60 over, and has been fitted with forged pistons. The original manifold is present, along with a 4-barrel manifold and a 2-barrel Rochester carburetor.
If this Firebird Convertible is essentially rust-free, then it would make a sound basis for a project car. With the included upgraded mechanical components and an interior that looks to be largely complete and in good condition, it seems to tick a few pretty good boxes. It certainly has the potential to be a nice car when completed.
Don’t tell. It I’m pretty sure the 2bbl carb won’t mount up to the 4bbl intake very well.
But seriously, this looks like a solid project for somebody.
Not having the original engine is somewhat disappointing, but it then it frees up the purist in me to play with that engine which can be fun with a small block.
A 68 Firebird missing the original 350 is not a big deal.
If it were a 400, kind of a bigger deal. A Corvette missing a small block numbers matching is a far bigger deal to the cult Vette people. Understandable I guess. I have had 3 Gen 1 Firebirds and 3 C3 Corvettes. I get it.
As all have said, gives you the liberty to do something cool. I would go fuel injected crate motor with about 500 HP.
4 Speed would be a must.
love these more than their Camaro sisters. easy to mess around with displacement since Poncho blocks are basically the same.
this one isn’t a high value example given its options & condition so i’d use it as a starting point to create it just the way i wanted it.
wonder if it will stay under $10-12k?
The best of GM’s pony cars!

Stopped taking apart cause after the front wheel tubs and fenders were off, it was pretty clear the front frame was swiss cheese by the tub.
