One-Year-Only: 1969 Pontiac Custom S Station Wagon

If you’ve been in the market for a sort of uncommon A-Body and like family transporters, maybe this Pontiac Custom S wagon here on eBay would be a worthy contender.  It still seems to be a mystery why Pontiac chose this name-plate as a 1969-only model to replace the previous year’s Tempest Custom trim level, but sure enough, they did, so if your household is large or you just like wagons perhaps this one would make a good project.  It’s located in Perris California, not too far from San Bernadino, with bidding only up to $2,024 so far. This is a no-reserve auction, so the most optimistic bidder will be taking it home.

The Custom S was mid-level and available in a variety of body styles.  You could get a 2-Door hardtop, sports coupe, or convertible, plus a 4-Door hardtop or sedan, or the more spacious station wagon.  There was even a pseudo muscle car variant based on the Custom S in the works, apparently to be called the ET, but the powers that be rejected that idea, and instead here came The Judge.  But the seller throws out the idea that his car may be ripe for a GTO clone station wagon, so if you’re looking to do something custom with it maybe he’s on the right track.

This is one of those cases where we get very little background information on the vehicle, but even though it’s got a few scuffs and dents the body doesn’t really look all that bad overall, and if the wagon’s been in Cali for a long time maybe it’s pretty solid.  No photo of the engine compartment is provided, but it’s said to have a 350, the largest motor you could get.  It was offered in 2 varieties, with the base 350 producing 265 horsepower, or you could step up to the 4-Barrel higher-compression powerplant and have 330 horses.  It’s not specified which is under the hood, but the seller says the motor’s healthy and runs perfectly.

Things are kind of a mess inside.  The front seat is pretty much a basketcase, but the rear one actually seems decent, if you can try to imagine what it looks like through all that grime.  It’s hard to see the instruments, but the dash is cracked, and though it’s kind of rough in there right now, I’m wondering if you just replaced the front seat and floor mats, then spent a weekend cleaning if the interior might make it to the driver status if that’s all the next owner is aiming for, and just live with the dashboard.  What would you do with this one?

The only way i would drive this is with a 2 door conversion
I wouldn’t even know where to look for the specialized labor , rare , expensive and mostly crazy !
But it would be a beauty with the gto trimmings , too bad its such a long haul from cali to montreal …

We had a Pontiac Safari wagon, 1971-’72. Great car and it looked good too. Neat window in the roof. That is what I would want to play with.

Oh Wow! This is the first time (since owning one) that I’ve ever heard of a Custom S. Mine was just a two door not a wagon. Bought it for $50 or $75 and had to blow the coke out of it since the lady that owned it never drove over 30 mph the mile to work and back. Once I got it cleaned out, had it up to 130 on the Lake Ontario Parkway. Handled the same as at 3mph. If some months after (traveling back at 30mph) someone hadn’t crossed the centerline and hit me head on, I think I’d still be driving it to this day. Never could solve the mystery of what the heck a Custom S was, so I greatly appreciate the write up on this one. 👍

I was curious, so I searched for a replacement taillight. Amazingly enough, there’s one on eBay right now for $150.

Looks like a great potential project. But as long as there’s a lot of work to be done you may as well make it into something. I’m thinking Monkeemoble! https://www.streetmusclemag.com/news/monkeemobile-multiplicity-another-monkeemobile-for-sale/
