The more we post articles about the classic GMC motorhome, the more I want one. It’s hard to find anyone who speaks ill of these front-wheel-drive motorhomes when they’re looked after, and given how many still seem to pop up for sale, they must have been very well built when new. The seller believes his Canyonlands example may be one of the last of its kind considering the rarely seen factory orange paint job, and given how rarely an orange one comes up for sale, he may be right. The GMC is listed here on eBay with bids to $10,000 and the reserve unmet.

The word on the street at the time was that GM wanted to build the best motorhome the world had ever seen. Many RV experts would tell you they mostly succeeded, considering how wildly popular it became both when it was new and later on as a cult vehicle. The shorter wheelbase than a conventional full-size RV made the GMC much more appealing for novice campers or outdoors enthusiasts who simply didn’t want to try and maneuver an ungainly, oversized coach through urban streets. The GMC’s powertrain was based on a very conventional Oldsmobile Toronado engine, which makes parts-sourcing a breeze even if you’re out in the middle of nowhere. Now, the orange paint job: what are your thoughts on a vehicle this size clad in blazing orange paint?

Personally, I like it, and it’s a nice change of pace from the usual white with green decal combo we typically see these motorhomes dressed in. Plus, it just screams 70s, just like the interior. One of the best ways to discern how well any vintage motorhome has been looked after is by evaluating the cabin. If you see one that looks this pristine, with the original surfaces and vintage panels all in seemingly excellent condition, you know you’ve found a good one. Plus, check out that sweet upholstery on the bench seat by the kitchen table – if that doesn’t put you in a good mood, I don’t know what to tell you. The seller notes the rear-facing bench seats have been converted to a queen bed, which is a logical upgrade.

The front seats are not original, but they also appear to be way more comfortable. Look at the acres of glass you have up front – this is the way to see the world. The seller has made some big-ticket investments in the RV’s mechanical systems, noting a professional engine rebuild just 6,000 miles ago on an original 85,000-mile powertrain. The brakes are new as are the shock absorbers, and he’s installed new airbags in the rear. The tires are in excellent shape and even the original generator – recently serviced – is said to work well.
