Original Paint: 1966 Ford Galaxie 500

More often than not, when a barn find car is dragged out into the light of day, time usually hasn’t been kind to the body or the paint, and rust repairs and repaints are common. The seller of this 1966 Galaxie doesn’t elaborate on how long this car was in storage, but the conditions must have been pretty good as it is still wearing its original paint. You will find this Galaxie listed for sale here on Craigslist. Located in Carroll County, Maryland, it comes with a clean title. The asking price for this mighty Ford is $12,500.

This Galaxie certainly glows, and the paint and trim look to be in first class condition. Studying the provided photos closely, it looks like there’s a slight mark on the lower quarter on the driver’s side. This may just be a stone chip or a tiny spot of rust. Otherwise, the paint and panels look great. The original vinyl top must not have met the standards that the seller demanded, so a new top has been professionally installed. The owner has also had all of the rubber weather seals replaced, so water leaks should not be an issue.

The interior is also a testament to the care and attention that has been lavished on this Ford. All of the interior trim and upholstery is original, and everything has that new-car look about it. The seats, headliner, and dash are close to perfect. The seller took time to remove the interior to replace the carpet and installed Dynamat while he was at it. Then each piece of trim was cleaned and polished before being returned to its rightful place. The only deviation from standard is that I believe that the car must have an aftermarket stereo installed. I can’t see the head unit (glove compartment?) but there are a set of speakers installed in the rear shelf.

Under the hood is the original 390ci V8, which is backed by the original automatic transmission and rear axle. The engine has never been rebuilt, but the seller does state that it starts, runs and drives well and that the engine doesn’t burn oil or blow smoke.

This 1966 Galaxie is a testament to what can be found lurking in barns and sheds across the country. The condition of the car is close to new, and the car presents really well. For a fan of the blue oval badge who is looking for a nice, original car to add to a collection, this one probably represents a good option to consider. If I bought it, I would probably be very tempted to remove the aftermarket speakers so that it was 100% original. Apart from that, I wouldn’t touch a thing.

Beautiful car. I restored and drove a similarly-spec’ed ’66 Mercury Monterey that I eventually sold a few years ago due to lack of space, and I still miss it. These are great-driving cruisers.

I always liked these square taillight Fords with stacked headlights. I also think it’s worth the asking price. Please no comments about the red heater hoses, they were common replacement items back in the day usually bought at Kmart.

From where? ……Just kidding. I remember Kmart. Just like I remember Montgomery Wards also.

I cannot be the only one thinking that this car was restored 20+ years ago and put away, can I? It’s outstanding but without some (a lot) of proof, I just don’t buy the “original” claim.

Me, too. That driver’s seat screams reupholstered. Paint, vinyl top, head liner, etc. All re-done. But, still worth the price. C/L says $11,500.00

Maybe its just me but I don’t remember this red as being a stock color on the 66 Galaxie? But then I’m a grey hair that can’t remember what he had for breakfast. Do check the frame really well, as these were notorious for rusting out frames, especially here on the right coast. Presents beautifully!

Good luck to the new owner.

    Cheers

The seller must be a reader of Barn Finds.
There is a large, clear shot of the brake pedal!

Looks good. Last year IIRC before they had that big lump in the middle of the steering wheel for mandated collision protection. That always looked ridiculous to me but just an opinion on my part.

Price has been dropped to $11,500. Looks like a very nice car for the money.

Had a 66 Wisconsin Galaxie from my Grandfather, had a 352 and had a blast driving it. Plenty of room, fun to drive.
