Original Paint: 1970 Dodge Charger

It seems like lots of B-Bodies in the marketplace are either in destitute condition, with just about everything needing attention to get them back on the pavement, or they’re so pristine it’s an almost scary proposition to even consider driving them.  However, this 1970 Dodge Charger is one of those middle-of-the-road examples that’s no trailer queen but it is running and driving, plus there’s still quite a bit of originality here.  This is one of those Mopars I’d have a hard time deciding whether to just enjoy as-is, or bring up to the next level.

As time goes on, it’s getting harder to find vintage autos that haven’t had at least one respray, even those designated as driver-status.  However, the seller tells us this one is still wearing the same Dark Green Metallic paint it had upon leaving the St. Louis plant all those decades ago.  Granted, the finish is far from perfect with some dents and dings on the body as well, but the metal isn’t plagued with rust either like so many of these cars succumbed to.  The owner says that all of the panels are original except for the hood, and the sale also includes a pair of new-in-the-box turn signal indicators to fill the indentions here.

The green theme continues inside, with this one coming from the factory with buckets and a console.  In 2020, new seat covers were installed, and the next caretaker will receive new door panels and a headliner to replace the removed components.  It’s good that the carpet is missing, as we get to view the exposed floor, which shows some surface rust but still looks pretty solid overall.  The dashpad is cracked and the gauges are showing their age, but replacements for all of these will be provided.

Also original to this Charger are the 383 engine and automatic transmission, which the seller thinks may have been rebuilt, as he says the car runs and shifts very well.  While I can appreciate this one as a driver, it’s also understandable that the future owner may want to elevate the status, so if you have ideas already this 1970 Dodge Charger can be found here on eBay.  It’s being offered by 500 Classic Auto Sales in Knightstown, Indiana, and can also be seen here on the 500 Classic Auto site with about twice the amount of photos.  The same price of $41,900 is posted in both places.  Is this a B-Body that’s better suited to remain a driver, or is it wise to go ahead and perform a full restoration?

Look underneath of course and if it’s what you want by it.
It’s a great survivor in which case some would finish the interior then clean up the exterior before repainting it the same color.

This one has seen a few hands under the hood, with the replaced non-original radiator and AC compressor. I would do a front disk brake upgrade so that it would be comfortable driving in today’s traffic. Nice car, I am sure someone will come up with the cash. I will wait until the prices on all these drop.

Good luck with that. Most that say that are still carless when they’re shoveling the dirt in the hole.

If it was an R/T, it would be priced at twice that number.

I can think of 41,000 reasons I wouldn’t want an old green beater in my driveway.
