Package Deal: 1964 Pontiac LeMans Convertible And A Boat

Who doesn’t like a 2-for-1 sale? Most of us are bargain hunters and this is an unusual pairing: a 1964 Pontiac LeMans Convertible and a 1959 Aerocraft Boat. The seller has them both listed in the same Craigslist post, or you can see the photos and text here when the listing goes away, which it will and it may before I finish writing this. It’s located in Mesa, Arizona, where I should have moved three decades ago (not bitter). The seller has both of these listed for what seems like almost too good of a price: $2,500. For both. No, really! Thanks to Rod for submitting this great find!

I know, a car that looks this good and a boat for $2,500? Let’s see a show of hands who wouldn’t blink to pay $2,500 for a ’64 Tempest LeMans convertible alone? I thought so, the vast majority of you. My hand was up, too, which explains the sloppy typing. For 1964 with the new A-Body Pontiacs, the LeMans was back as a high-level trim package for the Tempest. These are the only two photos of the exterior which is unbelievably disappointing for such a desirable car, but it sure looks good from these two photos. They do say, “There is some minor rust in the lower rear quarters.” You knew that this car wouldn’t be perfect for $2,500 plus a boat. Still, $2,500 for this car seems like the world’s biggest no-brainer to me. I’m going to try to get through this without flying to Mesa and buying this car, and maybe just staying there. There is no snow in Mesa, is there? Ok, good – yeah, I’ll just stay there.

You can’t really see the carpeted lower door trim here too well but it has it, or it should. That was one of the upgrades that came with the LeMans trim package. The interior looks fantastic from the dash top to the seats, both front and rear. I’m assuming that this is a real listing. I recently ran across a listing for a great looking truck that wasn’t real and that one also was priced well below what I thought it should have been. There are “NO power brakes, NO air conditioning. It does have power steering.” That’s good, I’ll take power steering over the other two features on a convertible any day. This car has what was basically Buick’s Super Turbine 300 two-speed automatic. A 3 or 4-speed manual would have been a fun feature.

Speaking of features, one feature that would have been nice would have been a 326 V8. This engine, however, is GM’s 215 cubic-inch inline-six with 140 hp. The 215 was basically a reworked Chevy 230 cubic-inch inline-six. The 326 V8 would have had a minimum of 250 hp but 140 hp isn’t bad. The bad part is that this “car has not been started in years, but does turn over. The car ran great, shifted perfect and drove very nice.” Be prepared for doing everything on this one, every single mechanical thing that you can think of. Start making a list and pricing out the parts, you’ll need them. Still, with a NADA average value of $16,800, this car, despite the work that will need to be done, seems like an absolute no-brainer to me. A flipper’s delight is sitting right here. Why am I telling you that?!

As if the car wasn’t good enough for $2,500, the seller is throwing in a 1959 Aerocraft boat. They have it listed as a 16-foot but I think it may be just under 15-feet, unless I’m mistaken, and I could be. They say that this “boat is a four seater that we used for the urban lakes here in mesa. The boat does not leak. it comes with 2 mercury 40hp gas motors. The motors do not run. The trailer has perm tags”. I would have zero use or want at all for the boat or the two non-running Mercury outboard motors, but I sure love that ’64 LeMans convertible for $2,500. Now, about lining up a flight to Mesa..

    Flagged/removed.

To me, that means someone (flipper, out to make $) is after the deal bigtime, and doesn’t want anyone else to see it. This is to me a flaw in the Craigslist program. Not sure how it could be changed, as there certainly are scam listings. Have flagged many myself.

Does seem like a deal to me!

I’d say scam. The sellers description is too well put together for someone to ask so little. Sure, it might be legit, but I’d be surprised if it were.

OK, let’ say it’s a scam. How does it work?

Potential buyer: I’ll take it. Please don’t sell it until I can get there after work.

Seller: great, but I’ve been got a few inquiries, it might not be here.

Potential buyer: I have to have it, its my dream car. My grand parents had one just like it, the boat too.

Seller: I’d like to. How do I know you will show up?

Potential buyer: I can give you a deposit. Do you have paypal.

Seller: I don’t have PayPal, but you can wire $100 to my bank account and I’ll hold it.

      Repeat as often as possible.

Not as likely as with a modern car. Search Google for the same photos, if they are not stolen from another listing, probably not a scam. Scammers wouldn’t bother to pair a beat up convertible with a boat, and would never have them to take photos of.

My Father bought a 1964 Lemans convertible brand new. It was bronze with tan top and darker tan interior, 326 automatic. Nice car. He was a Goodyear man for some reason, and wanted the tires switched . The dealer did so with wheels off a tuurquise car. Yes, the turquoise rim showed outside the wheel covers. He didn’t mind; but it drove me nuts. I painted them.

Zero problems in four years. Of all the cars he had, that is the one I miss the most.

In 1969 when I got my DL I was given my mom’s 64 Tempest convertible 6 cyl/auto trans car after it had passed through my three older sisters. Well as you may expect it was less than perfect, the interior was filthy, dent in drivers door so it wouldn’t open, gutless dog but I suspect it was because it had not seen a oil change or tune up since mom let it go. Once I changed oil / trans fluid, coolant and a tune up it ran so great I cleaned up interior and took door panel off and with the help of a small sledge hammer and 2×4 pounded the dent out enough to get door opening again. It served me for a year then sold it to a cousin for a $100.

Looks like an aluminum boat. You can google Aerocraft/Aeroline boats and look at the original sales material from 1959. Cool stuff. I’ve restored a 1958 Shell Lake boat and a 1957 Glastron. Fins and all. A great way to burn up gasoline. There is definitely a following for these boats.

Hey Gregg, my sister gave me an old wooden row boat that has been in her barn for over 50 years. An old Boy Scout boat she told me. Going to get it when it warms up, if ever. Let me know if you want to ride along. Maybe make it the 2nd meeting of the Madison Chapter of BFers. Happy birthday! Mike.

If this was a true ad and not a scam someone got a deal of the day, boat or no boat the 64 ragtop was well worth the $2500 alone. My favorite car and one that I wish I still had was my ’64 Lemans 2 dr post I bought in 1970 after my tour of duty and saying goodbye to Uncle Sam’s Army. My Lemans had the very built 326 and 4 spd with engle cam, headers, holly 4bbl setup and would do the 1/4 mile in low 13’s all day. Getting married then divorced and a little one to take care of put the brakes on that ride just a couple years down the road, those were still some of the best times!
