Ford built nearly 175,000 convertibles in its successful initial run from 1964 to 1966. Because of their large production numbers, these cars aren’t terribly rare today. But they don’t often turn up in pairs like this duo near Palmdale, California. In the same family for decades, these 1965 and 1966 project drop-tops are available here on craigslist for $12,000 each or $22,000 for the pair (OBO). How does Mitchell G. keep finding great tips like these?
These Mustangs once belonged to the seller’s grandparents. They may have been “his and hers” ragtops since they were new or nearly new. We’re told they last ran about 15 years ago and have been parked since, perhaps outside where Mother Nature has been a busy and naughty girl. Both have fallen into a state of disrepair, but not enough where you need both to end up with one good car. You could restore both if your pockets are deep enough.
Both Mustangs have the same engine, a C-code 289 cubic inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor (180 hp?). Both also have floor-shifted automatic transmissions, power steering, and power-operated canvas tops. So a lot of boxes were checked on the order forms.
Differentiators are that the ’65 has a pony interior while the ’66 has the standard setup. One has a cracked dash pad while the other does not. Even the colors are similar, with blue being more dominant in the ’65. But both have rust here and there, and the tops are beyond saving on the duo. Right now, they can only be sold with bills of sale, though titles have been ordered and are “on the way.”

Thanks Russ and Mitchell, I appreciate Mustangs, these look complete, starting point seems too high. If I did a restoration I’d end up on the short end.
NOW I SEE THIS! I was just in Palmdale last week! These look like good project candidates, but the “ask” is a little crazy. The “original” Mustang prices have fallen lately (original Broncos have taken over for insane prices?) But a nice original Mustang is still desirable. I was in Palmdale, but not looking for any additional projects right now.
u see the rust along the rockers? Without that rooftop protection, those gulley washers that happen in the Antelope Valley would provide enough water to rust the insides out.
I am 54 years old and don’t think I have ever heard the word differentiators, cool to learn a new word though.🥸
Posting expired, but it matters not anyway. Both were priced too high for field junk, and the rust seen probably pales in comparison to the unseen.
