Parked 43 Years: 1970 Ford Mustang Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

By 1970, the Ford Mustang continued its dominance as the country’s best-selling “pony car,” but the gap had closed considerably with #2 (Chevrolet Camaro). Sales barely reached 200,000 units compared to 607,000 in 1966, when the Mustang had the market to itself. This 1970 fastback was parked in 1982, and the buyer will need some deep pockets to arrange for a comeback. Located in Cape Coral, Florida, this once-noble steed is available here on eBay, where more than $4,650 will be needed to crack the seller’s reserve.

With a mild styling update in 1970, fastbacks were a hot commodity in the Mustang camp. 47% of production were built as “SportsRoof” models (Ford’s verbiage for fastback). That included 41,000 “standard” Mustangs, while the rest were Mach 1s or Bosses. Rear visibility wasn’t the greatest in these cars, and only got worse in 1971-73 when the back glass was nearly horizontal. Only 12 years old when this Ford went dormant, it managed to cover 107,000 miles during that stretch.

This Mustang went through a color change at some point, as you can see evidence of its former finish in blue, especially the trunk lid. The interior was once white, though much of it may have been pirated while rust was chewing away unchecked. While a 302 cubic-inch V8 is onboard, a non-functioning Shaker hood was added. Lots of options were checked on the order form, including an automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering and brakes, and a fold-down rear seat.

The seller speculates that the engine is stuck, which implies no attempt has been made to get it going. Corrosion is everywhere, so you’ll need to have your body shop on speed dial. The fold-down seat and Magnum 500 wheels are not part of the deal – unless you’re willing to absorb an undefined upcharge. Regular steel wheels that will be provided will enable you to load your find onto a trailer.

Scary. Illustrates how bad things can happen over 43 years. Yet, I guess because it’s a SportsRoof….

Seller is keeping certain items (I assume because of their rarity/value).

Tidbit: the seller calls them Magnum 500 wheel covers; I’ve never heard them called that. Per the 1970 Mustang brochure, Ford simply called them “Sporty Wheel Covers.” Not to be confused with the iconic Magnum 500 wheels. You can see them in the ebay pics, and they do look cool.

It’s been undergoing its 2nd, slower color change, to reddish brown.

Now this is A Florida rustang .

If it was the BB with its original engine then one could be a top quarterly buyer of CJ Poney parts sheet metal. (Full pan, quarters, fenders, trunk lid and inside, torque boxes, frame rails.. rockers, inner rocker supports or rebody)
Just buy one cheaper and avoid the frustration…

A hard pass due to labor, rust, paint soda blasting and adding 35-40 grand minimum with sweat equity on top of belief the reserve isn’t already reached.

I rebuilt a 67 vert rustang in the 1990s and swore off needing a plasma cutter and mig welder 👩🏿‍🏭 to get doors aligned and shut … 😉. The end results was a sucess but time spent andd $$ was not ..

TOO much rust and even if it came with the tires and rims they are the only good parts that you would get. Just another rusty car with some nice tires and rims to make it look nicer. HARD PASS!

Wow, I am not familiar with cars in Florida, but is all that rust from the salt air? That shifter is scary looking!

Well the glass might be salvageable, maybe the taillights, possibly the cigarette lighter…..this pony needs to be put out of its misery. Nothing worth saving.

We’ve got a parts mule here, nothing more. Its best attribute is it isn’t a rusted out Mopar.

I’ll pass…in fact I pass on most American cars from that period…ugly bumpers, smog emission choked with poor quality equals a poor value and for resell.

If this goes for $4650 then I can probably get twelve for my 1991 Mustang LX, and the AC doesn’t work (condenser, )the power mirrors don’t, weather stripping leaks, paint is a work in progress. Etc. but hey mechanically she’s fine and all original.

Got my heart set on a 69 CJ, one day, but, been considering a retro model because the prices are thru the roof. If I went with a retro, I’d shop for something already built instead of rebuilding something like this that needs everything, eventually. Buy someone else’s lose…

$4650 is already way more than this junk yard dog is worth. A big “no thank you”.

Yep, eats cars alive… Manual vents get frozen in place, screws, bolts, switches. I know an old timer down here that sprays WD 40 in the trunk quarter panels, switches under the dash, just about everything under the hood. Takes him about 5 cans once a year. He says it smells better than rust… Lol

Yesterday, I shot down a Charger, only to find this Mustang in today’s Digest. Ladies & Gentlemen, it’s sad to say, but it looks like we’re hitting the bottom of the barrel with both Chrysler and Ford and the popular pony and muscle cars from 1964-1973 that are worth having have been already been picked up.
