Partially Restored: 1957 Chevrolet Corvette

57-vette-3

Wearing a layer of primer, at first glance it is difficult to guess what exactly the story is behind this Corvette. To our surprise this Corvette was partially restored in the 1970s. The chassis and all suspension was restored, and the engine was “fresh” upon being stored for roughly 45 years. The paint and body work were never finished, but really all this Corvette lacks is a sharp paint job and a few trim items to make it spectacular. Currently bid up to $27,500 with 7 days remaining till the auction close. Find it here on ebay out of Holly, Michigan.

The 327 V8 looks nice though is clearly missing some items. The distributor cap and spark plug wires are missing as well as the air cleaner. The current condition of this 327 is unknown, other than the fact that it was “fresh” when it was stored in the 1970s. The seller has not tried to start or turn over the engine, but we hope that it is still fresh after all this time. The 327 is backed by a T10 4 speed manual gear box.

The interior is very nice and original, aside from a Jones Tachometer. The carpet is missing, but the seats and dash are great. The door panels are too bad off, but they need a little attention. A nice carpet kit, and some door panel work and the interior would basically be finished. The body of this Corvette is very nice aside from the current paint scheme and a small crack over the right front fender. For the Corvette purist, the hood has been modified to resemble a cowl induction style scoop, and the rear exhaust openings have been filled in. The iconic grill teeth are missing, and the chrome work is listed as nice driver quality with no major pitting. Reading between the lines, there is some pitting but nothing major. The chassis is the star of the show with this Corvette having been restored with authentic Chevrolet parts sourced in the 1970s. The underbody of this Corvette is extremely clean, and this ‘Vette likely isn’t far from being a driver again. Some fresh fluids, system safety checks, and a fresh battery and we bet this ‘Vette would some to life.

After waiting for 40+ years, perhaps someone will finish restoring this ’57 Corvette. Although we will say we sort of appreciate the hot rod look the car has now. What do you think will be the price of the winning bid for this Chevrolet Corvette?

I’m no Corvette expert, but did the ’57s really have that wide a rear track.

What a neat car with lots of potential, ’57 is a great styling year and a 327 4 speed is a great combo for driving. Wish I had the $$$, I’d snap it up, anything $35K or less for this is a bargain. Add another $20K and it would be pretty well squared away to a very presentable driver.

I like it and it kind of has that old school hot rod look. If I was to buy it and finish it I would paint it any color but Red & White because that’s all I see at the car shows and I have to be different. JMHO !!!

I hear ya JW. I love this car and if I bought it I’d prolly go with the turquoise and white. Will be interesting to see what she goes for…

It’s obviously not matching numbers since the ’57 was only offered with a 283. I would not trust the ’27 and go with a new 383 stroker for some reliable horsepower.

I’ve got a 283 with a 2-4 intake out of a 57 vette that I’m running in my T bucket. Maybe I should buy it and swap the engines around.

I like it just as it is. Yes it’s someone else’s unfinished project, but I’d get it running and leave it as is for now. Wide track, chrome reverses and all. Go for a period look using what is already there. It’s not original so why try to restore. It’s always going to be a corvette and will always fetch some good money if you’re in it for that.

This Corvette and I are the same age. 57 truly was a great year for cars. This one deserves to be put back on the road as a hot rod!
