Partially Restored, Take II: 1969 AMC AMX

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1969 AMC AMX is giving me a case of déjà vu, as we just recently featured an AMC Javelin that was also described as being “partially restored.” I’m not sure what world we’re in where it behooves sellers to say their cars aren’t quite finished but aren’t exactly projects, but here we are. This example is said to have a “…fresh upgraded factory 343 4 spd and GoPac,” and is listed here on craigslist for $19,900.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rocco B. for the find. The AMX looks 100% restored by my standards, but the seller calls it a partially restored car. I’m assuming the only aspect of restoration that hasn’t commenced is a full-body respray, as the seller doesn’t mention any paintwork. The motor, transmission, interior, exhaust, interior, and tires are all brand new or completely refreshed – so you tell me how this isn’t a mostly restored car?

Regardless of how you frame it, the seller’s description of the freshened-up 343 makes this AMX sound like a very fun driver: “The 343 4bbl engine is freshly rebuilt with a balanced and blueprinted later model 360 crankshaft including new pistons with a highly desirable zero deck and 9.36 compression ratio.” The seller goes on to say it makes around 310-315 b.h.p., which does sound like a recipe for a good time to us.

If you’re looking for a 343-powered Javelin that hasn’t been restored, check out this SST model found in the large Georgia collection we’ve listed as a Barn Finds Exclusive. This is an automatic-equipped car that we’ll be digging out in the days ahead. If it were me, I’d always choose a project over someone else’s finished work, but I’m a glutton for punishment. Which would you choose?

I dunno. $19,900. that is damn near restored money and would merit a visit in person for sure.

Anything less then a 390 engine hasn’t quite appreciated in value. Nothing wrong with a 343. The mods done by the owner the 343 makes the same HP as a stock 390. I would want documentation on the work done.

Otherwise the red is striking. Bumpers have been re chromed. Originals were never that nice. It just may be that nice in person. Good luck to the seller

With the circus (Barrett-Jackson) in town, this should go F-a-s-t!
Nice looking ride, if it had A/C…

My dad bought a ’68 Javelin with the 390 AMX SST package. What an awesome car! I learned how to drive in that car and remember how light it felt. No factory AC, that car ran extremely strong, as Mustang and Corvette drivers would attest!

I recently bought a Frost White 1970 AMX with a 1972 401 cid engine from the same seller. My AMX has AC and a Tourqeflight 727 automatic. Love, love, love the car which I have always dreamt about owning. Seller knows AMC inside and out and is a great source to buy from!

I am the seller and also the owner of AZ AMC Restorations, the largest AMC restoration and AMC Street Strip engine builder on the planet. We build more AMCs and build more AMC engines in a year than most folks will ever do in their lifetime including some really fun “stroker” combinations like. Partially restored means it was not stripped down the bare chassis so it has factory wiring and any other original parts that were still in good working order plus it is a repaint (not done by us) over the factory baked enamel rather than stripping down to bare metal and starting all over like any full restoration should have done to it. Regardless, it is a great car for the money and a blast to drive! Attached is a picture of a beautiful 70 AMX we also recently partially restored. The car’s new owner loves it!

Thanks Barn Finds for recently featuring some Javelins / AMXs. These, 71 – 72 Satellites / RRs, and 66 – 67 Chargers are the ones I like best right now.
    Still semi-affordable classics.
