Parts Car Project? 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy Camaro was the first serious threat to dethroning the newly appointed King of Pony Cars, the Ford Mustang. Chevrolet sold 221,000 copies of the Camaro in 1967 and another 235,000 in 1968, a relatively unchanged product. This ’68 Camaro is one step away from the crusher, so the buyer will need to decide to either attempt a very ambitious restoration or purchase it for whatever viable parts remain. Located in New River, Arizona, this rusty “project” is available here on eBay for $2,499 OBO.

Visually, the ’68 Camaro was little different from the ’67. Astute observers will note the ‘68s no longer had side vent windows in the doors and that side marker lights were added due to new Federal regulations. While the seller indicates this car once had a V8 and an automatic transmission, both are long gone and it would now be considered a “roller,” if it could roll. However, the VIN provided indicates this Camaro was just one of 47,000 built in 1968 with an inline-6 engine.

This car no longer has a title either, so a bill of sale will have to do. What it does have is loads of rust, with the rear quarter panels eaten away and gaping holes in the floorboards. Whether this car is anywhere close to being complete is anyone’s guess. It once wore green paint, and the bucket seat interior was likely black (or green).

Sometimes cars like this are bought for their VIN or cowl tags. But since this is a run-of-the-mill six-banger Camaro, would either of those tags be in demand? The seller iterates that the buyer will be responsible for transportation, which means either finding wheels for the rear axle to roll or perhaps dragging it onto a flatbed, but would it survive that trauma?

Good candidate for crushing into a coffee table.

Wow. Avoid the tetanus booster and drag this sorry thing to the crusher. Better to be a new refrigerator than an old bucket.

C’mon now, you have to give this more credit than turning this into a coffee table or a refrigerator…. Why, there is probably enough in there to make a nice microwave too!!!
Honestly, its a shame this old Camaro got this bad.

The seller also has 2 other, less rusty, shells listed that have been stripped of all usable parts, each listed for $3,500. None are worth building even if free.

He also has an infinity for sale. And I never actually thought I’d see a day where I e Infinity is worth more than three early Camaros, but here it is.

I think it’s a beer pallet. I hauled beer and the forklifts had 4 tines and pallets like these.

The tetanus shot you’re gonna need is more expensive than what this pile o rust is worth.

You’d need to pay me to take it away.

Guttering’s damaged, too; lifted on chains, perhaps?

All three of those Camaros together still aren’t worth what he’s asking for one. There comes a point when it doesn’t matter what it ONCE was… it’s nothing scrap metal now.

Don’t be ridiculous, Scott m- this thing will also need new tires and a complete fluid change before it’s road trip ready.

I’ll pick up some baldies while I’m there and check the storm drain- uncontaminated fluids are over rated lol!

    Some re-assembly required.

the good side of it is, if it gets back on the road won’t need to eoll down the windows to “flush it out” if someone blows a bad one.

It’s fun to hear the shock from folks that never dealt with rusty cars, but to folks in the rust belt, these cars were everyday sights. Nothing was sacred in the salt. I realize some think how could a car get like this. Well, to someone, clearly NOT from Arizona, it was just a beater that had many winters and finally they moved to AZ. taking the Camaro. And that was it. It’s already been parted out, and unsure why someone would even keep this. Even by northern standards, it’s pretty wasted but some parts could be saved for who, I just don’t know.

Howard, you’ve probably said the answer already but probably too many lacquer thinner fumes when I used to work in a body shop and I don’t remember. What part of Wisconsin do you hail from? I grew up in Crandon.

Hi David, one farmboy to another. Crandon,,,Brush Run, dynamite snowmobile/ATV trails, I miss parts of the Badger, those parts, not the bugs or extreme cold. I’m a wuss in Colorado now. Grew up in Milwaukee, lived in Oconomowoc, Ft. Atkinson, Lake Mills, Waterloo, Marshall, S. Milwaukee, Phillips, ( I know, sounds like Johnny Cash) and retired in Colorado. I worked for a body shop supply in Milwaukee, and still love the smell of thinner.

Come on boys and girls, don’t you think we’ve taken this “collector car” thing just a little too far? The reason that potential sellers would even advertise something like this is because there are people, not only on this site, but others as well that will look at an add like this and their comment will be, “it’s pretty rare and could probably be saved”. It would be in everyone’s best interest if other than being supportive of a seller that lists something like this, to just tell them that it is a worthless piece of junk. (I must admit that on this particular ad, the comments have been realistic and truthful)

Advertisements like this are nothing new, what is, is they get much more exposure. In the early-80’s me and a couple of friends would descend on the local 7-11 every Friday to get the latest issue of Auto Trader. We’d thumb through the issue looking for good deals and laugh at the overpriced cars. With the advent of eBay, Craigslist and Facebook, to name a few the cost of an ad in both time and money is nonexistent or minimal and can be easily seen nationally. Asking price is often equated to value by sellers and spectator, but actual selling price, assuming a particular item is ever sold, is rarely if ever known.

    How much does it weigh?
(Current scrap price x weight – transport cost = value)

And just how exactly does the fact that it is in New River relate to the car? Your comment makes absolutely no sense.
