Parts Or Project? 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback

The Mustang was one of Ford’s most successful product launches ever. Between 1964 and 1967, they had already sold 1.7 million copies and would sell more than 300,000 more in 1968. That was the year the seller’s fastback was built, but not much is left of it today. It’s rusted, no longer has a drivetrain or interior, and there’s no VIN. Located in Sutherland, Virginia, this forgotten Ford is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $7,500. Is this a project or parts car you would go after? Thanks to Chuck Foster for another true barn/shed find.

Because the Mustang had received its first sheet metal refresh in 1967, the 1968 models were little changed. The addition of side marker lights for safety reasons is the quickest way to differentiate a ’68 vs. a ’67. As the market gained competition in the “pony car” space in 1967, demand for the Mustang shrunk every year after 1966 but continued to be the segment’s bestseller for years to come. In a variety of trim levels, more than 42,500 fastbacks were produced for the model year.

The seller is correct in saying this Mustang needs everything. Most of the good stuff has long since been pirated, such as the engine which could have been a V8 or inline-6 but we don’t know. The seller says the car had an automatic transmission the last time it had one. Other than one door panel, the dash, and the steering wheel, it looks as though none of the interior has survived. The floors have holes in them, and there are surely more elsewhere.

This Mustang is said to have been green with a black passenger compartment, but from the remaining sheet metal, it looks to have been painted blue. As a restoration, this would be an expensive and time-consuming project, but is it worth undertaking with no VIN? Perhaps there are a few items to be salvaged as a parts car (anyone need a headlight?), but at the asking price, those would be pricey parts. If I were going to try rebuilding one of these Fords, I’d start with something more complete, even if it cost more. What about you?

Even if the two zeros were taken off the price that “car” would be too expensive

Parts or project? Is that even a reasonable question after looking at this wreck?

Considering you can buy a brand new 68 Mustang shell from Ford, you would be a fool to even try to resurrect this crusty relic

I wish barn finds would cut out the 3 steps below useless classic. This is not what I’m expected to find on this website. Yes it a classic, but seriously???

There seems to be a “the nerve of this guy!” category on Barn Finds. I guess it’s cruel to laugh at the clearly delusional sellers whose offerings turn up here, so I suppose I’m just mean. But really!

Ha! How true. Try the saac forum! “Wrong” opinion there and watch out! Must happen everywhere.

And to think at one time I could have bought a Dark Green 68 GT Fastback with a 390 and a 4 speed just like Steve McQueen drove it wasn’t perfect it had been a daily driver with some nicks and scratches and maybe a few rips in the seats but no rust yet from the used car lot at my local Ford Dealer for the whopping sum of $995 I went on a test drive and it still ran like hell. I did not buy it because I wanted a Mach 1 or a Convertible

They even went to the trouble of cutting out the front inner fender aprons where the VIN would have been stamped. Enough to make me go HHHMMMMMMMMMMMMM?
