Are you Patriotic? If you are, you may like this 1976 International Harvester Patriot Edition Scout II. The truck/SUV is located in Madisonville, Louisiana and is in project condition. The Scout II is listed here on Craigslist for an asking price of $8,500. This 4WD Scout II has been listed for about 2 weeks.The red white and blue Patriot Edition Scout II was one of three Bicentennial-themed Scouts produced in 1976.
The interior is unrestored and shows wear throughout. The Scout is shifted via a 4 speed manual transmission. The seller states that the vehicle is not roadworthy but has had quite a bit of mechanical work done. The Scout II has a factory roll bar installed along with a worn Whitco soft top that is under the removable roof. The Scout II appears authentic because it has the Wedgewood Blue interior, chrome grill, 10876 decal applique and chrome reverse rally wheels.
The first generation of the Scout was called a Scout 80 and manufactured from 1960 to 1965. The second generation of Scout was called the Scout 800 which was produced in three sub-models (800, 800A, and 800B). In 1971, the third generation model was introduced and produced until 1980. It was called the Scout II (like this model). The first Scout 80s (1960-1965) were equipped with a 152 cubic inch inline four-cylinder engine. It was rated from the factory at only 93 horsepower. This was also the base engine in the second generation Scout 800 but it could also be ordered with a turbocharger to boost power to 111 horsepower. An optional 196 cubic inch inline 4-cylinder was introduced in 1966. Other optional engines included a 266 cubic inch inline 6-cylinder (1967), a 304 cubic inch V8 engine (1968), and a 345 cubic inch V8 engine (1971) in second and third generation Scouts. The ad does not say but this is most likely a 345 cubic inch V8 engine.
As can bee seen, the Scout II is missing its headlights and has some fire damage to the front fender. There are several dents and bumps on the body work as well as rust. The truck/SUV has been been restored mechanically, according to the seller, including brake work and engine work. The ad states that the front body mounts are worn and need replacement. I am not sure how you tell if this is an authentic Patriot Edition but, if it is, it is a unique and low production model.
This is a good project. There’s definitely some body work that needs to be done but chances are that you will need to do just as much to anything else of that vintage. I sure would be willing to give it a try. And, I might add, there are some guys out there starting to make patches for these. Incidentally, the 266 engine was a V-8. BG265/BD264 we’re 6 cylinder engines. An inline six for this vintage would’ve been the AMC-sourced 258…

Not fire damage. Wreck and shotty bondo. Then sprayed with some black primer.
I wouldn’t mind owning one of these things.
$8500? and then how much more? Not worth it at that start price. Maybe half or even $5K TOPS!
It sure isn’t like it used to be. You used to be able to buy something like this for a song and now it’s a major investment just to get started. I blame the collector car auctions because they really set the market on its ear. I guess it now depends on how badly you want to have it…
