1969 AMC Hurst SC Rambler

This AMC Rambler may not be a barn find, but we don’t come across these Hurst specials very often so it still deserves a mention. The seller has owned the car for over 10 years and it is currently in unfinished project form. The red, white, and blue color scheme may seem a little flashy, but once you get behind the wheel and set your hand on that Hurst shifter, you will know that this machine means business. The 390 V8 put out 315 horsepower and there were lots of little tweaks made to make this a serious racer. Luckily, this one sounds like a good start if you are wanting a patriotic project.     It’s rare, that’s for sure. It was the last “Rambler” made, as in 1970, they dropped the American and it became the AMC Hornet.( you could still get a “SC”, but it was a SC/360 Hornet, rarer still) There were 2 paint schemes you could get. The “A” scheme, as mentioned, and the “B” scheme, which was mostly a white car with red and blue stripes at the bottom. One of my favorite Ramblers and while at the AMC Kenosha reunion a few years ago, there were several of these and even parts in the “vendor” area, so you should be able to get everything you need to finish it. These bring $50g’s or more now, so it is a good deal, relatively speaking, of course. There are many clones, but this has the “M” as the 3rd letter in the VIN, which designates a true SC.( along with the “X” engine code) Pretty cool find.

      “B” paint scheme, the rarer of the two with approximately 500 produced. 1512 total made, and while the Hornet SC-360 is similar the Rebel Machine would be the more logical follower to the SC/Rambler, I’d say.

    Interesting car but how would you like to be the poor salesman trying to sell these in competition with a 1969 Nova SS? It is probably why so few were sold and remain. I remember them sitting on the lot well after the model,year and being sold at huge discounts. We really used to chuckle when we saw them on the street. I think a good 69 Swinger 340 would take them handily.

        You can’t compare a modified car to a stock model……..if we were going to do that……lets put it against a Hemi Charger…….or a modified SS 396.

Most unappreciated Solid Americans (at least when they left) went over at the behest of politicians and their stupid power games, and came back to America’s darkest time for the treatment to/of their HERO’s!!!!!!

      Target sales was 500, they sold 1503. You think that is poor sales? Guess again. They did not sit on dealer lots after the model year. Learn your AMCs before you type. You are thinking of a different model. The only way to confuse the 2 are if you need glasses also.

    They were pretty quick. I always thought American Motors was just trying too hard in the late 60’s until I rode in a Javelin with a 390 4 spd. It was wicked fast and beat a Super Sport 396 Chevelle. There still funny looking, but I would love to have one.

    Nice find. This would be such a nice alternative to the usual GM & Ford offerings. Also, likely to gain some value to justify ownership to that growing croud who seems to need to profit from a vehicle rather than just drive and enjoy it for the driving experience. Don’t get me wrong profit on a vehicle is great but I personally seek out vehicles that I intend to flip for a profit and others I want because I just like the vehicle

    Sure hope this Hurst S/C Rambler gets restored back to the glory it deserves. I have never seen on of these in person so this is one model in the vast array of ’60s muscle cars that I am not kicking myself for not buying when they were cheap and I had the opportunity.

    Dave Wright, I am pretty sure the AM salesman were upbeat selling the SC/R compared to a Nova SS396 in the distance nothing special and looked no different then grandmas Nova. Certainly would have felt a lot better at selling the Rambler over the Daytona and Superbird winged warriors. They spent up to three or more years on lots unsold still new. Pretty sure the sales commission for them was a mini.

    The SC/Rambler did exactly what American Motors intended. It got them press. It got the people where they needed to be. On the lot and into the dealership. It was NEVER intended to be mass produced. It did show that AM was in the performance business and business was good.

    In reference to being taken by a 340 Dart. Pure fantasy. A little known Rambler was the 67 343 4 speed. It was in GTO territory then. Too few made to make an impact but those who remember know different. An auto magazine in 1971 pitted the SC/360 Hornet against the 340 Demon. Not what you would expect there either.

    Off topic but my concerns for the unfinished SC/Rambler is that with the value of these cars why the seller is parting with it? Shouldn’t he finish it since it is this far? It looks like not much is left to do. I am always leary of these all you need to do projects. I have seen one a guy started restoring and the painter used the wrong shade of white. The owner was so mad the car was sold.

    Other factors. Even though Ramblers in general were cheap basic transportation. Those basic plain jane interior parts and body trim emblems are not cheap. A quick look on ebay for 1969 NOS Rambler parts will tell you the facts. Specific SC/R parts if not there be prepared to hand over your checkbook. Better hope it is all there and never take the sellers word that it is. Another SC/R is pictured as well in the background and could prove to be a red flag. If there is something missing it could be on the other guys car.

    Bottom line is. If you do not know these cars do not buy them in project form. Don’t expect to buy this and add only sweat equity. Not going to happen. This is a limited production car. Not sure what the real buy price is but spending $10- $15 K more on one you can drive now you would be that much more money ahead. Depending on price and what is left to do will dictate combined with any missing parts will dictate what it is worth.
    It is a fact that the SC/R is one of the most valuable AMC muscle cars. Don’t let that be a basis your decision.

      Hi AMCFAN, ( me too) I know full well of the ’67 Rogue 343, 4 speed you speak of. At the AMC reunion in Kenosha,( have you been? Well worth the trip for an AMC buff) a gentleman from Ohio had a blue ’67 Rogue,343, 4 speed. While I’m not really a fan of the red,white and blue paint on the SC, ( like you say, mostly a marketing ploy) this Rogue was the nicest American I ever saw.
