Pole Barn Find! 1972 AMC Javelin AMX

Dusty and downtrodden, this once-shiny American Motors Corporation Javelin AMX seeks a new owner here on eBay after what appears to be decades of wanton neglect. The opening bid of $3,000 has yet to be cast for this vehicular castaway in Manchester, Georgia. Born as a short-wheelbase two-seater, the AMX became a top-line variant of the Javelin in 1971, sharing the longer car’s four-seat configuration and wheelbase.

A strong contender for the “Lack of Effort Award”, this poor pony car’s listing includes a few walkaround pictures and 10 words. That may prove effective if you want to get a few grand for a dusty old Ferrari, but these days it’s more suitable to a No Reserve auction than one starting at $3000.

Despite the blue cast in these photos, this is most likely a black interior. The U-handle shifter indicates this car came with the optional center console.

Here we might surmise the black primer hides an original Surfside Turquoise or Jet Set Blue body color. Either hue makes a fine tribute to the ’70s and compliments the black interior. Thanks to planethoustonamx.com and Hemmings.com for some details. AMX engine choices ranged from the standard 150 HP 304 cid V8 to a 255 HP 401 cid monster. The latter would certainly stir up interest among the AMC faithful. With air conditioning, power brakes, and power steering this would have been a well-equipped and stylish two-door. I’d love to pay the “get it out of my sight” price of $100 and solve some of its mysteries. What would you give?

Looks like somebody got sick on it, Sheesh. Hey Geomechs, maybe the guy trying to siphon gas from a sewer tank was driving this one home.

Chevy next to it looks clean, this one looks like it was pulled from the swamp and then put in the shed.

I’m guessing a 304. She’s not too impressive once you get her bonnet off.

If you zoom in on the Ebay listing, it shows 401 on the fender.

Just a guess, but with no trim going down at the little styling redirection in the rear side windows; I’d say a ’57.

It’s a well optioned car. 401 is the motor you want. Too bad about the AT. Has AC, PS PB, Tic Toc Tach Cowl fiberglass hood so probably the Go Pack too. Split vinyl roof.

At first I thought that those were bird turds all over it ,but maybe it spent some time at the bottom of some body of water. Just to be sure to wear a has-mat suit when you get close.

With a 401 and this being an AMX it’s definitely worth the 3k even though it needs a full bath and steam clean. It even has the the ac compressor still attached.
