Police Interceptor 390 V8! 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The XL edition of the Ford Galaxie 500 was introduced in 1962, perhaps as a countermeasure to the Chevy Impala SS (Super Sport). Billed as “Extra Lively,” the 500XL came with bucket seats, a console, and a snappier trim level. The seller’s 1964 edition is special in that it has the 335 hp, 390 cubic inch V8 known as the “Police Interceptor” because of its use by law enforcement. Located with a dealer in Prosperity, South Carolina, this powerful beauty is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $39,900. We’re appreciative of yet another great tip here from T.J.!

Styling of the 1964 full-size Fords was a continuing evolution of the design that dated to 1960. Sleeker than the ‘63s, the ‘64s didn’t sell quite well, perhaps to most of Ford’s thunder going to the all-new Mustang introduced in April that year. Still, more than 88,000 Galaxie 500XLs were sold with two-thirds being 2-door hardtops like this one. The balance were convertibles and 4-door hardtops, a body style not offered by Chevrolet in the similar Impala SS.

Police Interceptor V8s were assigned the P-code in Ford’s engine inventory. We don’t know how many were produced for police vs. public consumption, but it was a part of Ford’s advertising and not a guarded secret. Adding to the appeal of this cool Ford is that it was also ordered with a 4-speed manual transmission. The claimed mileage is 51,000, yet the vehicle has been restored at some point. P-code XLs came with heavy-duty suspension, bigger brakes, and exhaust headers like their cop counterparts.

We’re told this car has likely spent its entire life in the Southeast. The body is laser-straight, the Raven Black paint seems flawless, and the interior and trunk are equally nice. The dealer sold this beauty about a year ago to someone who later got an itch for a Corvette and sold it back to them, so hence it’s on the market again. That’s a shame as I think I would rather have the Ford.

My 72 LTD convert was a smooth cruiser. Later Crown Victoria LX was comparable to other luxury vehicles I’ve been fortunate enough to own. Too bad Ford has abandoned this segment of CARS.

Not just that segment, nearly all segments, the only non-pickup or SUV they make for the North American market is the Mustang.

Chevrolet has gone even further, they’ve abandoned passenger cars completely, the Camaro last year, their last passenger car, the Malibu ceased production a few months ago.

As usual you are SO right, Rick. The management of the domestic auto companies, including Stellantis, don’t seem to know what the hell to do from day to day. Are they that much out of “tune” with the market? Honda has no problem selling all of the Civics and Acords they can build; likewise Toyota with and Camrys and Corollas. Could it be the kind of cars they were building? A few weeks back even Farley, who seems to be OTL on these topics, stated that according to some surveys people want simple, reliable cars that they can understand how to operate! Duh!

Definitely strange things happening today on BF. Some posts telling me to log in, others telling me I’m posting too fast! Must be the gamma rays. BTW. This is a beautiful big Ford!

64 was an exceptionally good looking car and this one shines. The writeup claims laser straight but can’t help and wonder why the misfit on the right side of the trunk lid. Not to be nit-picky but the trunk mat is a marginal fit and appearance as well. All that aside, this appears to be an exceptional 64, the two best body styles for that year was this variant and the 4-door hardtop. Throw in the bucket seats and either becomes a winner. The 390 Interceptor with the 4 speed, wow. How did it manage to survive?

Sharp, well-equipped, desirable car. Big V8, 4-speed, bucket seats, black with lots of bright trim. I like those spinner wheel covers with the whitewalls. Not cheap, but if it is as good as it looks, might be worth it.

I looked at the dealer’s web site. He describes his business as starting when he helped his dad restore Model A’s. Now, it’s a family-operated hobby-turned-business. Small inventory with an emphasis on “classics.”

Alot cheaper, better built–better looking and you can work on it WITHOUT electronics and big monthly insurance and vehicle payment. Very nice looking car. I know where their is one and I left word for the guy to contact me. I,ll stop in again this spring. When I am in the area.

I believe the author is correct in stating that Chevrolet did not offer the SS trim package on the four door hardtop model, but they definitely offered it on the convertible model, I had an acquaintance who’s dad bought him a ‘64 Impala SS convertible with a 409 and a 4-speed.

My brother had a black 64 Galaxy 427 dual quad 4 speed. I like that this one has the Lincoln interceptor option and a 4 speed. This summer I will be looking after I sell my rare 65 Satellite I have owned for 53 years.

Nice to see this with a factory 4-speed. Not nearly as common.

My 1st car was a 1964 Galaxy 500 XL, Vintage Burgandy 2 door with a 352. One thing the dealer didn’t tell me that it had a swing-a-way steering wheel. I thought those were only in Thunderbirds. Yes, I still wish I still had this car.

I remember test driving a 62 police with a 406 that would scoot. I thought they were used in 63&64??

Gotta admit that, as a Ford man, I’ve never seen one of these in my 68 years even at as many car shows as I’ve attended here in Georgia. I had a 65 w/289 & my brother a 66 w/390 in mid 70’s. Frames rusted out on both. Thanks Russ. Ya taught me something new today.
