Skoda isn’t a brand we see very often here in the States, but these Czechoslovakian built cars are great. Not only are they quirky and unique, but they are reliable and fun. This 1969 Skoda 1000MB was just recently imported from the Czech Republic, where it was well maintained since brand new and has only accumulated 67,000 miles. The car has a clean Florida title and is being offered on eBay with a starting bid of $1,200 and no reserve.
Skoda was known for building simple, reliable, and affordable cars. This meant that they didn’t come with many luxuries. The interior in this 1000MB is in good condition, but the seats were worn so the seller replaced the red driver’s seat with a grey one and installed some seat covers. Everything else in the interior is original and in working condition. We would return all the seats to their original red color to add some sporting flavor.
Skoda was among the many manufactures in the ’50s and ’60s to put the motor in the back, but unlike many of those manufactures they continued to put the motor in the back into the ’80s. This 1000MB’s one liter four cylinder only produces 44 horsepower and since the car is lightweight it is capable of a top speed of 75 mph. This isn’t the fastest car, but it could make great commuter car with its over 30 miles per gallon efficiency.
This Skoda is ready to be driven and enjoyed. It has its fair share of dent, dings, and scratches, but overall it looks good. These cars were notorious for having rust issues, but luckily this car looks to be rust free and solid. They have often been called the poor man’s Porsche. We are skeptical of the claims, but given the success Skoda had in rally racing, we sure would love to give one a try. Just make sure it can be licensed in your State.
Porsche?
I drove a 1986 Skoda 130 Rapid here in Seattle that I got across the border from Canada back around 1990, drove it until 1998, Loved it! It was great fun to drive, there wasn’t another one besides mine this side of the border, parts were cheap, but you couldn’t get anything locally, I was sad when Skoda stopped selling cars in Canada would have loved to have one of the last fuel injected cars. Todays Skodas are just a Volkswagens in drag :-( In case you’re wondering I registered my car as a 1974 through titles unlimited in Alabama, Nobody ever questioned it and better yet no emissions tests!
It (he) would look beautiful parked next to my Simca 1000. I,ve wanted one for many years.
I am so pleased to be able to report that this Skoda puppy will be coming up to our Matchbox Motors Microcar & Minicar Museum collection here in Massachusetts.Chas
