Preserved Pickup: 1964 Volkswagen Single Cab

The word “patina” does get tossed around a lot, but in this case, I think it’s justified. This 1964 Volkswagen Single Cab pickup is a real-deal survivor with no previous attempts made to correct the paint or otherwise restore it, and the seller notes it’s not even all that rusty, especially in the areas that matter most for a Type 2 VW. The pickup retains its original gates and is a rare dual treasure chest model with stowage on both sides underneath the bed. In addition to being totally cool, it’s also quite practical. Bidding is quite strong and it’s nearing the Buy It Now price of $24,900 here on eBay where it’s currently bid to $21,200 with the reserve unmet.

The seller rattles off a long list of uses he’s found for the pickup-bodied Bus, including going kayaking. The roof rack and towers are custom built, and he’ll be swapping those over to another project. It’s a shame, because they look pretty killer here! The listing notes that the VW runs quite well and he’s even pressed it into borderline daily-driver duties when it’s not raining out. The single cab is said to have some rust “…not where it typically hurts,” and that the frame, out rigs, beam, and “….90% of cargo floor, drip rail, window surround” are all solid. That’s pretty impressive for any Type 2, but especially for an exceedingly rare pickup.

The interior even features its original door panels and headliner, which you simply don’t ever see unless it’s a total time capsule example that’s been kept under wraps. This pickup has clearly been used, but evidently by incredibly cautious owners. The seats look to have been redone, but that’s a worthwhile change from stock given even the most carefully used vehicles of this vintage likely need new seat coverings. The upholstery appears to match the rest of the cabin, so I’d count on it at least being correct per the original specifications. The dashboard is uncut with no signs of a later aftermarket radio hacked in.

The engine is a 1600DP that the seller claims is “…properly set up with correct air filter, etc.” but that he’d also work out a deal to keep it if you have another engine sitting on the shelf that you’d like to drop in. The seller has done this one right all the way through, leaving the patina in place but ensuring the mechanical bits are up to snuff, while not altering what didn’t need to be changed. He does have the parts needed to lower the single cab, along with a stainless steel exhaust, but chose not to install those parts in the interest of keeping it as original as possible – and that likely has a lot to do with why the bidding is so strong. Get in line if you want a shot at this preserved Type 2 pickup!

If you lower it, it becomes unuseable as a functional commercial vehicle.

If it’s not useable as a functional commercial vehicle, what’s the point?

Very nice vehicle, great pictures, good information, reasonable price.
Other sellers should use this as a guide on how to sell your car.

I’m lucky enough to have a 66 single cab. What a fun, amazingly useful attention getting vehicle it is! I bought mine with the intention of having some fun with it and then selling it..that was 10 years ago! This looks like a very nice one that should be used and enjoyed as is..just get used to people asking you if it was turned into a pickup from a bus..because they have never seen one before!!

Never realized there was a smuggler’s hole under the bed. That changes things… :)

The lockable under-bed compartment is a great feature. It basically is the whole center floor area of a bus. The standard configuration was one door on the passenger side. The driver’s side panel was blank. So when everything slides over to the driver’s side, it’s crawling exercise to collect the tool box or whatever. Even with the optional dual doors like this, you have a 50/50 chance of the thing you’re looking for being on the 1st side you open.On the double cab versions you didn’t have the doors BUT there was this huge area under and behind the back seat. With the seat and seat base out, it was a large enough area to sleep in. I never tried to overnight in the single cab tho…

It was one of these that caused a life-long VW habit. Dad got one for $25. I thing it was a 58 or 59. Got it up and running. I recall there was a pile of aspirin in the fuel tank. “Musta been where his headaches were!” was the joke. The upper starter bolt on these was a through bolt meaning SOMEBODY had to be in the engine compartment squeezed WAY over on the right to hold a wrench on the nut while the bolt was removed from below..Guess who got handed a flashlight and a wrench…
I got back in there and WHOA!!! There is a FAN back here! I’ll be NOBODY knows there’s a fan back here!! I was hooked! That poor thing carried all the materials to build our house, was a daily driver, loaded up with band instruments it went every weekend to dad’s gigs. The gas pedal was bent from where someone had tried to push it through the floor. Filled it once a week from the Agway tank next to be barn. I recall it being loaded with wet sand piled higher than the cab (9 foot bed) and it climbing up from the creek bottoms at the same speed it did that hill empty. You were a lot closer to the road and it took 3 feet on the brake pedal to stop it, but it hauled that much weight and didn’t seem to care. Early one morning coming home with the band equipment, he was being tailgated and was pushing it a bit harder than he wanted and BANG! Blown engine..Ended up giving it to a friend who came to get it with a sunroof model bus..What a machine..I had a 68 double cab years later but that’s another story..

Fantastic. The difference between a dumb flipper’s ad and someone who truly cares about the car. Wonder what car they bought that’s pushing this one out.

Pfft, $24g’s, I have 2 words, American Pickers. Mike Wolfe has a pickup like this, and promotes the inflated prices you see here. ( Btw, Mike AND Danielle both are going through divorces, Frank was the smart one, never married) Oh sure, it’s unique as heck, for say a gated community, or grounds keeping, but like all these vintage VW’s, no matter the configuration, they are all horribly out of date for todays roads. I’m sure many bought the window van, piled all their buddies in for a ride, and were shocked at the handling, stopping, and never did get it into 4th gear. Fun to see, as most, if not all were vans, but to spend 5 figures on something like this only proves once again, more money than common sense.

Howard, I haven’t watched it in a long time, not for any particular reason, just no time etc. I knew Frank had back surgery and hadn’t been on in it in a while, but I didn’t know about the divorces so I was Googling. There’s a complete soap opera going on! Frank claims Mike hasn’t spoke to him in 2 years, basically since the surgery and never even asked how he’s doing. He officially isn’t coming back to the show and I guess they were feuding before this.

Mike has a new girlfriend who has appeared on Stern. You can look up yourself what she did on the show. CLASSY. Who knows, but I’m guessing Mike’s changed over the years with his fame and what can you say about someone that hangs out with the likes of dirt bags like Kid Rock?

On another note, I left a comment on this post yesterday that must’ve been deleted. Literally the only reason I can think of is that I insulted the intelligence of flippers? No profanity, etc.
