Clean, unmodified Monte Carlo SS examples are getting harder to come by, especially ones that still run and drive well. This 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS is said to be completely stock and original, right down to the factory dash—which, notably, has no cracks. It’s located in Moorestown, New Jersey, and sounds like a turnkey cruiser with just a few cosmetic details to sort out. See it here on craigslist.
The seller claims the car is “completely stock unmolested,” which will be music to the ears of G-body purists. The interior is described as clean overall with fully functioning A/C—rare in itself—and a dash free of cracks. It’s been sitting for the last two years but has recently been freshened with new oil, air, and breather filters, along with new tires and a new fuel pump. The seller says it “starts right up, drives and stops,” and that “everything works the way it should.”
Like many G-bodies of this era, the headliner is sagging and will need to be replaced. The seller also plans to install new front sway bar end links, which should help tighten up the handling a bit. Otherwise, it sounds like a well-kept survivor that hasn’t been chopped up, lowered, or hot-rodded—which can be tough to find in the world of ’80s performance coupes.
The 1987 model year marked the final production run for the Monte Carlo SS in its original form before the Lumina coupe took over the NASCAR duties. With its angular styling, V8 power, and rear-wheel drive layout, the Monte Carlo SS is one of the last muscle-leaning cars of the pre-OBD era.
If the seller’s claims hold up, this could be a great base for a full restoration or just a well-preserved car to enjoy as-is. Either way, there’s definitely something appealing about finding a true survivor that still wears its original parts proudly—and even blows cold A/C.
Would you restore it completely, or keep it original and just fix the headliner?

These are getting very hard to find with no stupid kiddie mods. Those are not original tail pipes. I had a new 88 SS. They are much different. No one is reproducing them that I know of. Nice car here. Very fair asking price.
seller is asking new sticker price how about spending 250.00 and do the headliner and visors it would be well spent money. not enough pics especially for c/l they let you put up 24 pics for the ads
have any of you fixed a headliner? ugh
To bad with that interior the original owner didn’t go with the gray stripe kit. Still good looking.
Love these year Monte Carlo’s. I think this generation was the last of the really good looking ones. More pics, especially of the underside, engine and trunk area would be a lot better. I personally would have spent the few bill$ to get the headliner repaired before listing it.
Call me crazy or whatever but I wouldn’t buy it simply because of the state its in, watched to many YouTube videos of people who purchased cars from New Jersey, new York and Florida where they misrepresented the car granted you can chalk a lot of it up to not getting eye’s on it before purchase or not hiring someone to check it out for you
These cars are fun to go for a cruise in , If you wanted to increase hp in them it did not take much
I know someone that has one of them . Not numbers matching anymore but she has not found top end on it . fun car !!! yes the drive train has been upgraded.
If Chevy had did the same thing Buick did with the 87 Grand National the 87 Monte Carlo would have been a hit . It’s always had the looks even more than the Grand National. Just my opinion. Imagine what one would be worth.
