There are vehicles that you know are going to valuable for the foreseeable future. Even as brass era cars begin to trail off and vehicles from the 60s and 70s begin to trail off, other models have shown no sign of slowing down. The last of the air-cooled Porsches, for example, never experienced depreciation. The GMC Syclone and its SUV sibling, the Typhoon, have occasionally been sold for modest sums in project form, but when it good to excellent condition, the sale prices are often quite strong and show no sign of slowing down. This 1991 GMC Syclone listed here on eBay shows higher miles and is in excellent condition.
The reason vehicles end up being home runs among automotive enthusiast circles is not entirely unlike a rock star employee. They do things differently and to a degree that lets it stand head-and-shoulders above the crowd. When you spoke of building a high-performance pickup in the 1980s and 1990s, it was almost a foregone conclusion that it would have a big V8 crammed under the hood and place an emphasis on straight line cruising. Not the Syclone or Typhoon: GM wanted to build a sports car with a pickup truck bed, or an SUV was far more “sport” than “utility.” Side note: it’s hard to believe this Syclone has 66,000 miles on the clock!
When GMC rolled these trucks out, the motoring press was shocked. There’s the famous Car and Driver magazine feature that pits a Syclone against a Ferrari – and wins. The turbocharged pickup could make the run to 60 in under 5 seconds. That’s still ridiculously quick by today’s standards but it was downright Earth-shattering in the early 90s. A pickup truck? With that kind of performance? Unheard of. Needless to say, it was clear the Syclone and Typhoon marched to the beat of a different drummer, and one that moved very quickly. As you can see in this photo, the interior looks as good as the outside.
The seller reports only owning this Syclone for about a year, but it seems like he’s been busy in that time. The 4.3L V6 has been treated to a variety of mechanical repairs and updates, including a new distributor, ignition module, cap and rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and more. The reason the paint looks so good is because the seller has treated it to what is described as an extensive paint correction project, and the bodykit was also reattached and snugged up wherever possible. Even better news is that the factory boost settings haven’t been messed with, which hopefully means it hasn’t been subjected to wanton abuse. Bidding currently sits at $34,000 with no reserve.
Raced one in my stock 89′ LX 5.0. Lost.
I wanted this back then . My mom and dad gave me a hard time so had to pass . Same with the grand national gnx i was going to order that but said I could not afford it. But I was able to afford it I was making good money. oh well settled for trans am gta later on..
These were the hot ticket back then-in more ways than one! Most folks around here knew it wasn’t for hauling a pallet of bricks or bringing home premade corral fencing but still appreciated that it’d smoke almost any import of the day.
Thought the Typhoon was a little more practical but still a lot more fun than the ubiquitous soccer team van.
I’d love to own one of these even if its a gussied up S-10
Way overpriced.
Had a friend with a 5spd 4300 RWD s10. That little pickup got up and went. Handled surprisingly well also. Had lots of fun on the back roads with it.
GREAT pickup BUT I have a 2012 with all the same goodies and black as well. PLUS a hot 4,8 V8 that screams. Wonder what IT will bring on BARN FINDS and HOW do I list on BARN FINDS???
SORRY, I neglected to mention earlier that my 2012 1500 2dr4wd has a leather interior right side dual exhaust ,20 inch Cragar’s and like new Micheline’s AND has been in many shows as well.
This will bring good money. Anybody saying it’s overpriced is a noob.
Some people have more money than brains.
OK Courtney. then why is my 2912 Silverado in the same goodies and more goodies priced $10,000 less by all sources. . A NOOB
Not a GMC guy but these little trucks are pretty special. I had a 97 S10 SS that I loved and would still have if it hadn’t been stolen. Just looked at the Ebay ad and there are 22 bidders so this is a legit sale. Somebody doesn’t mind paying 35k for this little truck. At the end of the day though this is still a small pickup with a nice engine and options. Very rare for sure but if I had 35k, or even 40k if this hits that, I think I would buy a nice first gen firebird with a V8 or any older GM. Gotta love the free market though. Be nice to know what this guy paid for this before listing it on ebay a year later.
