Pristine Original: 1991 GMC Syclone

The GMC Syclone and Typhoon are two enthusiast vehicles that simply will not leave my frame of reference as it relates to vehicles I’d like to own someday. From the limited production to the awesome performance to the convenience of having a pickup bed or large cargo bay to throw a bike in – these turbocharged trucks check an awful lot of boxes. But as many of you already know, it’s getting difficult to find one that hasn’t been previously modified. This 1991 Syclone here on craigslist has just 44,000 miles from new and appears to be in bone-stock condition, and presents quite well with resilient paint and polished wheels that shine like new. The seller is asking $30K for the Syclone and resides in Tavernier, Florida.

If nothing else, go look at this Syclone and then plan to stay awhile, as it resides on the largest island in the upper Florida Keys. What a life – driving a beautiful Syclone and living in the Keys, it doesn’t get any better than that (well, it probably does, but this is my ideal for the moment.) The mileage is low, but not so low that you necessarily anticipate perfection – regardless, the seller has done an excellent job keeping this Syclone preserved for the long-term, as the interior shows barely any wear-and-tear inside, looking like it has about 20,000 fewer miles than reported in the listing.

The engine bay features a similar degree of cleanliness, with painted surfaces presenting well and all hoses looking like new. The 4.3L V6 features a Mitsubishi turbocharger and Garrett water-to-air intercooler, along with forged internals, and makes a healthy 280 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. At the time, the Syclone and Typhoon were heralded for their performance, which is still quite impressive today: a 4.6 second run to 60, and blasting through the quarter-mile at 13.7 seconds. The truck earned all sorts of accolades for its bonkers speed but was still a tough sell given the impracticality of the package and the higher price tag.

Today, those factors matter far less, as it becomes increasingly clear that high-performance, single-cab, short-bed pickups with all wheel drive, lowered suspensions, and ground effects are a thing of the past. The Syclone has been rising in value for some time, and while ratty ones or modified trucks are still fairly cheap to buy, this is definitely a case where it’s wise to spend a little bit more and get a far, far better vehicle in the process, especially one that hasn’t been modified. This is all the money for a Syclone, but I can’t help but feel it’s still a good value relative to what a clean example like this will be worth in the next ten years. Do you think prices for GMC’s turbo trucks will escalate?

Seller’s phone is area code 612 (Minneapolis).

Pics don’t resemble any part of the Keys I’ve visited.

Hi Jeff, I hope you got what you were wanting for your Syclone, sweet little truck. I have S10 that I am trying to build up but want to keep it the 4.3 engine instead of a V8. Anyway, wished I had seen this before I bought mine S10, very sweet truck and again, hope you got what you were asking for it.
