Affordable Ariel Atom: MEV Rocket

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This great hobby has many fun and unique cars that fly under the radar. Up for sale is one of these cars that I had never heard of. How many of you know about the MEV Rocket? Take a peek at this car here on eBay. Located in Chesterfield, VA, this track-ready racer is being offered with a Buy It Now price of $17,000. Offers are also being accepted, so if the thought of blasting around this roofless rail Rocket excites you, give the seller your best bid!

The Ariel Atom has long been spotlighted in the purpose-built lightweight sports car market with its stripped-down design and brisk track performance. However, these cars are selling for around $80k in today’s market, a price that excludes many from owning an Ariel. But fear not; this MEV Rocket offers a unique and affordable alternative.

At its core, the MEV Rocket is designed for pure driving enjoyment. This is a very light car, weighing only around 1200 pounds. It has been stripped of almost all “luxuries” (i.e., body panels!) and is set up for tight handling and performance. Utilizing a 2.4 L Ford ZTec engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, these cars are reliable and inexpensive to work on, making them a great track day ripper.

This Rocket looks to be in excellent condition. When determining the quality of a kit car, it’s essential to look at the quality of the fabrication, the panel fabrication, and the aftermarket components used in the construction of the vehicle. We don’t get too many detailed pictures of this car, but we can see some Wilwood components (which is good), and the body panels look passable. The welds, however, are not master fabricator quality, but for this price point, they will definitely hold. So, what is your take on this kit car? Would you blast it around your favorite track? Or do you need some more protection and a V-8 mill? Regardless, this car is of high value for smiles versus cost and will provide many fun-filled weekends for the lucky buyer.

Watch the two Top Gear episodes featuring the Ariel Atom for re reference. Not sure how comparable to them this model is, but those are rocket ships on wheels to drive.

Seems to me, that the logical next step for a vehicle of this kind would be to install the newer Ford 2.3 EcoBoost, the present engine has 176 hp, that I’m sure could be up graded, but why when the Eco B stock is 310hp, that is easy enough to bump to 500 with injectors, pulley’s and at chip flash, then it would be wise to up-grade suspension and braking systems, but that’s just if you want to truly go fast and have max fun

Wow. Unless you are a graduate Welding Engineer, Certified Aircraft tubing welder, or a Certified Welding Inspector, that is a pretty bold statement to make.
