Radical Ram: 6-Wheeled Custom Dodge Ram Van

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Every now and again, you see evidence that is borderline archeological in nature of what customization trends were in a certain era. For owners of vans from the 70s and 80s, there was seemingly no limit to what was possible to add your own personal touch to your vanning experience. This 1986 Dodge Ram Van has been treated to an extended wheelbase with a six-wheel conversion, resulting in an elongated cabin and limo-like length that should make tight turns interesting. Find this wild Ram Van here on Facebook Marketplace with an asking price of $15,000.

I can still remember getting books out of the library in the early 90s that showed all manners of show cars and trucks and custom creations like this van (I wish I could remember some of those book titles!) While a conversion like this for anything other than a professional limo company today is highly unusual, the van culture at the time seemingly saw no limits to what a privateer owner could do to their van. If you look at the Dodge from this angle, you see it has two of the full-size side windows that would normally occupy the bulk of one side panel of a normal length van – giving some indication to how much length has been added to the wheelbase.

And with all that added length comes ample cabin space. This Ram Van has taken on the identity of a small motorhome, with what appears to be a full bed over the rear axle. Captain’s chairs, a fold-out sofa, and cabinetry with perhaps a sink area with storage underneath are all custom touches, and appears to have been finished to a decent quality of fit and finish. The seller doesn’t tell us much about the interior features, but it’s encouraging to see coordinated upholstery between the different seating areas (as well as up in the driver’s compartment) along with curtains and full carpeting on all exposed surfaces.

As you can see, the upholstery from the rear passenger area continues to the front on the bucket seats and engine cover. The seller simply says he is open to offers and not interested in low balls, but it’s hard to assign a value to something like this. The quality of the work is one of the most important considerations, in my opinion, as you don’t want to get into fixing issues with the chassis or bodywork where the original van ends and the addition conjoin. More relevant? Finding out if this six-wheeled conversion was a local celebrity on the show circuit, as someone has to remember when the Dodge was patrolling the streets. Do you remember this van from back in the day? Thanks to Barn Finds reader MisterLou for the find.

People would pay it to keep quiet.

FB link isn’t working for me but it’s probably a tag axle out back. This thing would definitely scrub rubber in a short radius turn.

I don’t think this was a shaggin’ wagon. This looks like ma and pa’s traveller’s. But not worth $15k.

Referring to this as maybe being “archeological in nature” may also be a stretch.

In the late 70’s, a local high end vehicle repair shop built a Dodge 1 ton van, lifted slightly, with a 440ci engine w/4 barrel carb, 4 wheel drive with a 4 speed manual transmission. It was a camper for off-roading and looked great! Accordingly, it worked well.

Just outside of St Petersburg Florida, Pinellas Park. The company was named for the owners, Eibel and Pinder, I think that was the correct spelling.

I’m in my middle 50s and past the days I want to move around a class B RV thing hunched over I would say get it running and driving safe then see if you can flip it for profit to one of those people who think it’s cool to live in a van

Because on SNL, he was a “motivational speaker” that used to say that “he lived in a van down by the river”! Just put in “Chris Farley-living down by the river.” It’s hilarious!
