In 1956, the Special was Buick’s entry-level series, positioned below the Super, Century, and Roadmaster. But across that range of models, there were only two station wagons, one of which was the Special Estate Wagon. This is one of them of which 13,770 were produced that year. Having come out of the dry Southwest, this Buick has been sitting for a while – but runs when coaxed. It’s available here on Facebook Marketplace for $7,500. The listing for this vehicle describes it as a Regal Sportback. But that must be because the Buick Special is not a category recognized by Meta. The Sportback was a more recent mid-size Buick sedan. At any rate, the Special was a pre-World War II nameplate that Buick used through most of the balance of the 20^th Century. It was the “leader of the pack” in the mid-1950s and was the Buick you purchased if you were focused on the sticker price. They were powered by a 322 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 220 hp.

The cowl tag decodes this automobile as having been two-tone originally, finished in Dover White over Cambridge Blue. That changed to yellow some time ago and the finish is ready to go back to the original colors. We’re told the body is solid and most of the rust is limited to a spot under the driver’s foot pedals. The blue interior has been baked by the Sun and dry rot is now a part of the package.

A video included in the listing shows the V8 starting and idling, but we don’t know if the Dynaflow transmission is up to helping the car move around (it leaks). The vehicle, particularly the rear, has been raised off the ground, which is probably a plus, letting air move around the wagon rather than settle.
