Rare 1979 Hurst/Olds W-30 Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The 1979 Hurst/Olds was the first built since 1975 after General Motors had downsized its mid-size cars (in 1978). It was also the first time the Hurst/Olds was produced with less than a 455 cubic inch V8 and the only intermediate GM car built that year with a 350 engine. The seller appears to be an Oldsmobile fan and has a pair of these cars from 1979. The original goal was to make one good automobile out of two, but the seller is working too much to get around to it. Both are available here on Facebook Marketplace as a package deal and the duo may be found in Bowdoinham, Maine for $6,000. But that was a year ago when the cars first went up for sale.

In 1968, Olds partnered with Hurst Performance to build a muscle car carrying both names, the Hurst/Olds. It would be produced off and on until 1984. The 1979 and 1980 editions would be based on the Cutlass Calais Coupe. The ’79 edition was the first to be built solely by Olds, which means that Hurst was only a supplier with its Dual Gate Shifter. Two primary color choices were offered, white (46%) and black (54%), with gold being the accent color on both. We understand that the number of assemblies at 2,499 units was deliberate – it was done to avoid a GM certification required at 2,500 copies.

It’s unusual to see one of these cars 46 years later, much less near twins together. One of them has T-Tops, so we assume the other does not. One has a rebuilt engine that was done before going into storage 20 years ago. And one looks rusty while the other does not (we assume that’s the one that was inside a storage container). Both have automatic transmissions, and one has new tires on gold aluminum wheels that look great. The interior of a single car looks trashed while the remainder does not.

If you bought the pair, we assume the one with the better body is the car you’d focus on while using the other as a donor. The seller also has a 1980 Cutlass (non-Hurst) that’s in running condition and is also for sale at a price not indicated. Extra parts will come with the sale to help with getting the project off the ground. Even though the listing is old, we assume the cars have yet to be sold as the seller says if the ad is up, they’re available (but with FB Marketplace, you never know), Thanks, Bruce M, for this package deal tip!

Being fairly rare I would first focus on the vehicle in better condition and then move on to the other one. Both deserve to be restored. $6k I think is reasonable but if still available after a year you may be able to pull a deal. I like these Hurst, not my favorite of the Hurst Olds but would take a chance on this deal.
