Rare Early GT! 1965 Ford Mustang GT Hardtop

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford knew it hit a home run with the Mustang almost immediately, and the GT package helped buyers combine popular performance and cosmetic options into one bundle. This 1965 Ford Mustang GT Hardtop in Granada Hills, California looks better than new, and the air-conditioned coupe can be yours for $22,000 according to the listing here on Craigslist. If a turn-key classic is your style, this might be the ride for you. Special thanks to Rex M for the tip!

Early air-conditioned Mustangs got the under-dash unit shown here whether it was ordered from the factory or dealer-installed, according to MustangSpecs. The GT package added manual front disc brakes, performance suspension, fog lights inset in the grille, rocker stripes, GT emblems, and more. The seller offers this car as a rare and original Rally-Pac car, adding the Tachometer and Clock slung across the steering column as visible here.

The sporty Fastback 2+2 had not been available until the model year 1965, and this Hardtop coupe provided a more traditional roofline and trunk. What looks like Cragar S/S wheels add a racy Day Two look. The Burgundy paint shows well, and I’m assuming that vinyl top has been replaced. Through-valance twin exhausts and the specific gas cap also come courtesy of the GT package.

The 225 HP A-code 289 cid (4.7L) V8 could only be topped by the 275 HP K-code 289. This one sends power rearward through a three-speed automatic gearbox. Though not factory-stock, the engine compartment could be made that way if it’s important to the new owner.

With virtually nothing needed other than a change of name on the title, this GT may not last long. The vinyl top adds a touch of class to the tarted-up hardtop, and air conditioning will keep you cool when it’s not windows-down cruising weather. Fastback Mustangs often command a premium, but some buyers prefer the hardtop lines and quieter cabin. Would you pull the trigger on this hardtop GT or hold out for a Fastback?

That button was not an option in 65. Was added as standard equipment in 67.

I probably shouldn’t leave this post but can’t help myself . Why do you have to be so nasty and close minded. Obviously many people love mustangs, that’s why there at so many of them.
I always told my children that if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything.

The engine should be black with gold valve covers and air cleaner to be correct. But a very nice car, for sure.
