Rare 1971 Ford Ranchero “Special Value Package”

While it never received the mainstream acceptance that its builders expected, the Ford Ranchero and Chevy El Camino were recognized as attractive propositions by a particular segment of the motoring community. While they didn’t possess the load-carrying capabilities of full-size pickups like the F100, they invariably tipped the scales at a lower weight than the vehicles that formed their foundation. That meant that with the right drivetrain combination, a Ranchero could offer unrivaled “bang for your buck” motoring. That is one reason why many Rancheros rolled off the line with a decent V8 under the hood, although the fact that they were largely ignored and considered as workhorses by insurance companies helped their cause. Our feature Ranchero rolled off the line in 1971 and is 1-of-3,236 ordered by its original owner with the “Special Value Package.” While predominantly a paint and trim option, it gave the Ranchero a distinctive and attractive boost in appearance. It is in good condition for its age and is ready to be enjoyed by a lucky new owner. Located in Pittsburg, California, you will find the Ranchero listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN of $18,500, although he leaves the option open for interested parties to make an offer.

The seller indicates that he is only the vehicle’s second owner. I’ve always considered a known ownership history an important consideration when assessing a classic car as a potential investment. Finished in Code 3 Bright Red, this Ranchero makes a bold visual statement. Its paint shines beautifully, although it isn’t clear whether either of its owners has treated it to any exterior restoration work. There are no significant visual flaws in the paint, and the same appears true of the panels. I would love to state that this Ford is rust-free, but the seller reveals that there is rust present in the floors. It isn’t clear how severe it is, and only an in-person inspection would determine whether immediate attention is justified. The “Special Value Package” brought a vinyl top, a blacked-out hood, laser stripes, and wider steel wheels with hubcaps and deep trim rings. These features remain intact, and their condition is as impressive as the rest of the exterior. The trim appears excellent, while the tinted glass is flawless.

When we reflect on this classic’s drivetrain combination, we can appreciate why a particular segment of the classic community is attracted to the Ranchero. Lifting the hood reveals a 351ci V8 that should produce 240hp. The rest of the package includes a C4 automatic transmission, a 3.00 rear end, power steering, and power front disc brakes. A Torino with an identical combination would cover the ¼ mile in 16.4 seconds. With the Ranchero tipping the scales at a not inconsiderable 350lbs less than the Torino, it is no surprise that it can storm the same journey in 15.8 seconds. A faster figure could be possible, but the lack of weight over the back wheels can make it more difficult for drivers to transfer the engine’s power to the tarmac. This inherent capability can attract individuals seeking more performance than a Torino offers without the added expense of undertaking modifications that compromise originality. For potential buyers, it appears that this classic is a turnkey proposition. The owner says that the vehicle runs and drives perfectly and that the steering and brakes feel great.

The owner supplies interior shots of this Ranchero, but their quality isn’t great. Apart from some exterior cosmetic upgrades, the “Special Value Package” also brought better upholstery. The bench seat in this classic wears Red Spectrum cloth and vinyl, while the remaining upholstered surfaces feature matching red vinyl. Visually assessing the interior is virtually impossible, but the owner states that the seatcover, Black carpet, and kick panels are new. The dash and pad look okay, so the interior may not need any significant attention. The included Marti Report indicates that the original owner specified a clock and AM radio, but it isn’t clear whether these are intact or if there have been any aftermarket additions.

It is hard to argue against the overall presentation of this 1971 Ranchero. When you consider its weight, it offers the promise of more spirited performance than a similarly-equipped Torino. While they don’t provide the load-carrying capacity of an F100, they are still a remarkably versatile classic providing a higher level of refinement and comfort than their larger sibling. The BIN on this Ranchero is about in the ballpark for what you might expect to pay, although I err on the side of caution due to the uncertainty over the floor rust. However, if this isn’t severe, this could be a decent buy worthy of a closer look.

My bro had a 70 rancho with a stock 351 cleveland 2bbl, bone stock and did that thing haul @$$. This ones sweet, however a cali car with some rust in the floors would be worrisome. As Adam points out, good PROFESSIONAL appraisal should be done. DO NOT USE ebays inspection service. Its like stevie wonder inspecting you car.

New one on me too, never heard of this trim package. I think it looks good. Eye-catching color and exterior trim, and cool upholstery. For sure you wouldn’t see yourself at a show.

    NICE!!!
With he got the Delux Marti report…..production numbers would be neat to see….
I would actually believe that this one is a one of one…not like the 5 one of ones I saw at Ford Carlise….
I wish I was old enough back in the 60’s—70’s to actually “order” cars, how fun it would be to really special order it!

A really nice looking car but, shows adding stripes now and it has a Cobra grill, so how much has really been done to it and how much is original? Still a very good looking Ranchero.

      Steve H,

I worked at a Ford dealer when these were new. As I recall, if you ordered the Special Value Package on the GT only [not the base or Ranchero 500], you got this style of grill. However this body number [46] is for the base model, the 500 is 47, the GT is 48. So I agree the grill has probably been changed sometime in it’s life. Plus, the wheel caps don’t have the GT emblem in the center, so I suspect this is a base Ranchero with the Special Value Package and the added grill.

And the Lazer stripes are 100% correct. The dealer I worked for used to order extra stripe decal sets and the sales guys would often close a deal on cheaper Rancheros [or Torino hardtops] by including the stripe sets. I know because I was usually the guy who installed them!
