Rare Harrods Edition: 1986 Jaguar XJ6

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We have seen plenty of XJ6s, but this is unlike any we’ve ever found before. Jaguar joined up with the famous Harrods department store in London to create something special for their most discerning buyers. This thing was supposed to slot somewhere between a Jag and a Rolls. That’s not just some gold spray paint on the grill. These had some serious detail work inside and out. They retailed for double what the base model went for! This one is little crusty, but the seller claims that it has covered just 15k miles and they are only asking $3,000 here on craigslist. Thanks goes to J Liu for sharing the tip!

Take a close look at the carpet. There are Hs printed all over it! It may look more like the inside of a woman’s designer handbag than a car, but perhaps that’s fitting for someone who shops at a fashionable place like Harrods. The seats were retrimmed in Connolly leather and the door panels were covered in suede.

These cars were advertised in the men’s department so it would be interesting to know how many were actually sold. There isn’t much information about them online, so I would assume there aren’t many floating around. I did find one that sold back in 2006 for $22k. It was in good shape and you can look at the photos here on Barrett-Jackson’s site.

There’s nothing classier than lots of walnut and gold. Here you can see the plaque that announces to your passengers that they are riding in something special. If they couldn’t already tell…. It reads, “This vehicle is one of a limited series converted exclusively for Harrods by Panther”.

I wasn’t able to find any information about Panther and what exactly they did. Perhaps they did similar conversions on the other cars. The cat name does make me wonder if it was more of an in-house thing though. Can any of you enlighten us on this kitty connection?

One important thing is here missing though. Besides all the fancy visuals, these cars also came with some luxury upgrades for the back seat passengers. Jaguar removed the rear bench and replaced it with some buckets from the Daimler. Then they constructed a center console complete with wood trim, clock, cocktail cabinet, gold plated manicure set…, and a Television! That may not seem like a big deal today, but it was huge in the eighties.

There was room for a few VHS cassettes, but for those who wanted to tune into the local news, there was a boomerang antenna mounted on the trunk lid. Remember those? Well, there was supposed to be one back there anyway. Every piece of literature I could find mentions that TV, but for some reason the antenna has gone missing here. Perhaps someone removed it? Let’s just hope the center console and those sweet fold-down trays are still back there!

I know nothing about these Harrods Jaguars, Jesse, but can tell you that if you had added the word “Westwinds” to your “Panther” search, you would have uncovered far more! As here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panther_Westwinds

I wonder if they were all supplied with the air-freshener? Seems a shame to mask the wonderful aroma of all that leather, wool and wood!

I’ve always enjoyed car descriptions like the BJ auction on a Jaguar like this one:
“Custom built by Panther Cars, LTD for “Harrods” world famous department store owner ( Al Fayed).”
Does anybody really knows what happened with the sketchy 1959 MB 190SL exclusive ad? Jesse?

Odd that it’s LHD – as far as I know, there are no Harrods stores in North America. Panther – known for making ugly oddly proportioned specialty cars that are priced like expensive motorcars but look like kit cars.

The LHD is the part I find odd too, you would expect this to be a mostly UK only package where Harrods has the name recognition, it reminds me of the fancy Carat Mercedes customs from the same era.

Harrods attracts a lot of foreign customers, particularily from the Mid East. You only need to look in the street round the back to see all the Dubai plated Ferrari and Gwagens.
It was likely marketed at them and if its a US version it wouldnt have been hard for them to sort?

Only 14000 miles? I’ll let you insert your own British reliability joke here.

That’s about the life of most Jags before something shorts out or seizes up.

I want this. If it were near a port I would buy it.

It’s apparently only about 120 miles from the Port of Tacoma – and I’ve shipped cars from there to Australia, Japan, Belgium and Thailand.

So, now I’ve called your bluff!

PS – I can recommend a great freight agent/customs broker to arrange the shipping too. Easy to do!

I’m probably in the minority here, but I find this thing ticky-tacky.

That’s hideous. I’ve seen better looking backyard abominations built by the blind and drugged here on BF.

I am the current owner and seller of this car. Interesting that I wasn’t contacted about this article, I could have cleared up some of the questions mentioned. But it is all original, and everything in backseat is in fact still there with the exception of the clock, even still have the crystal decanters and glasses. If you are interested, my number is [we don’t publish phone numbers].

I was just pulling out my cheque book, however, it looks like the listing has already been removed.
Anyone get the sellers contact info?

I took copies of the advert but unfortunately didn’t scroll down far enough so the number is cut off. (So have the other info if useful)
