Rare Jamboree Edition: 1982 Jeep CJ-7

This listing is for a limited-production Jeep CJ-7 known by the faithful as a Jamboree Commemorative Edition, and often called the rarest CJ-7 ever made. Jeep made less than 700 examples available to the buying public, and loaded them up with special equipment that would come in handy for any enthusiasts that planned on attending the annual “Jeepers Jamboree” on the Rubicon Trail. As you might expect, this is an all-out field day for Jeep owners to test their trucks capabilities in punishing trail environments while also connecting with friends old and new. This Jamboree edition has just under 141,000 miles and minimal alterations from stock, but it doesn’t appear to come with the optional accessories package. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $8K and the reserve unmet.

To me, this is one the best features: that awesome original spare tire cover remaining intact. Since trying to hunt down (and succeeding!) in finding original spare tire covers for my Isuzu Trooper projects, I can say that items like these that are susceptible to weather-related damage and just general wear-and-tear are the first items to perish on a truck like this. Not only that, but if you think about installing a spare tire on the side of the road in the dark, how worried are you about carefully stowing your spare tire cover? Regardless, it’s great to see this one surviving so well, and as a California Jeep since new, it’s no surprise to see the rust-free condition.

There’s a dedicated registry for these Jamboree editions, and the seller confirms this one is in the database. I realize those details may not mean much to some enthusiasts, but if you’re a fan of special editions like this, it shows that the owner is plugged into the community. This usually means they have a good idea of what details need to be correct in order for it to hold its value, and if nothing else, they don’t want to be judged by other owners for letting one fall into disrepair! The Jamborees came standard in this shade of Topaz Gold Metallic paint, and other extras included Jamboree hood lettering, chrome wheels, special rocker trim, and the aforementioned spare tire cover. The cabin received black bucket seats with gold inserts, a center console, padded roll bar, and a numbered dash plaque.

Of course, if you wanted to really step it up, Jeep offered an additional dealer-installed accessories package consisting of a Ramsey winch, brush/grille guard, light bar, AM/FM/CB radio, and huge Marchal fog lamps. To me, this is where I’d allow a deviation from as-delivered condition, as the lights, brush guard, and winch really set the Jamboree editions off. The seller notes that the numbers-matching 258 CID inline-six runs well, and has been altered slightly with a non-original carburetor and air cleaner. The seats have covers on them, which makes you wonder if the original upholstery is underneath and torn up, or if they’ve been re-done (incorrectly). Regardless, most details are correct, and I suspect bidding will stay strong until the reserve is cleared.

A friend of mine invited me to work with him on the Rubicon Trail as a Rock Warden and later on the cook crew in the ‘80’s, as his dad was one of the founders (they started with CJ-2A’s and -3’s!). Took him up on it driving my ‘79 CJ5 4spd 304 ci pulling the beer trailer in from the Lake Tahoe side-but that’s nothing compared to the time they brought in a PIANO..

At the time Jeep rewarded their top sales folks from around the world with a Jeep to use and all expenses paid if they wanted to attend, and we saw these easily (in most cases) along the trail-lots of hesitation though at Big Sluice with its sheer 110’ drop off on the sides.
Lots of Jeeps being repaired at the local Jeep dealers afterwards too.

This one looks to be in nice condition especially if it was ever used on the Trail!

You’re right Jeff it’d be nice to find the options they came with, but it’s probably too valuable now to use in the way it was intended anyway.

That is not the original spare tire cover.

Correct. Repop spare tire covers are available.

I have an 82 Jamboree that’s a unicorn; Olympic White with automatic. I think there were only eleven white/auto produced; mine is one of five known to still exist. It also has the factory winch and brush guard (dealer added Jamboree Accessory Package; estimate only 30 total installed). I didn’t know it was rare until a few months ago. I have definitely used and abused it. It badly needs restoring. A future project on the front burner now that I know the rarity.

Agree with that. Very embellished listing. Your absolutely correct, 5-6 k jeep at best. However very nice and if has 3 speed tranny even better.

I have never seen an unrestored jeep with clean floors and everything else like this. It came from a good home and hopefully goes to one.
