Rare Sport Package: 1992 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup

Oftentimes, when we find an owner hawking the virtues of a vehicle with limited production colors or cosmetic add-ons, it can lead to some eye rolls or should shrugs. But every now and again, a limited production model with these features and then some pops up that actually looks pretty special when all of the factory add-ons are tallied up. This 1992 Chevrolet Silverado pickup is a limited edition model with a factory Sport package made even more unique by virtue of its optional 350 engine and five-speed manual gearbox. And while it has 98,000 miles, you wouldn’t know it by looking at its spotless black paint. Find the Chevy here on eBay with bids to $15,000 and no reserve.

The sport package got you the requisite graphics kit and fender flares, and some actual hardware like skid plates, tow hooks, and a heavy-duty tow package. The other features were up to the owner, and this one decided to get a short-bed, single cab design with a stick shift and the highest output engine option allowed. So, you do have a bit of a unicorn when you put all those features together, and the seller estimates it’s one of less than 200 trucks equipped this way and wearing black paint. The paintwork, he notes, is in excellent condition, owing to that the owner bought it as a retiree and used it to haul his Harley-Davidson around the country.

The interior, of course, is bordello red like so many other GM products from this era. The cabin remains in very good condition, with what looks like some plastic fading on the dash above the glove box. The seller notes, however, the interior is in excellent shape and that the pictures may not adequately capture its true condition. The Chevy, of course, is a four-wheel drive model, so it’s really loaded to the hilt as far as a 1992 model goes. Because the owner and his wife intended to travel far and wide with the truck, they spec’d a painted-to-match locking bed cap as well, as that’s where their personal belongings would be kept.

I love vehicles like these. They are not overtly collectible on the surface, but it’s hard to deny that they are valuable to a dedicated crowd of GM truck enthusiasts. And, you really can’t go wrong with any pickup from the Big 3 featuring a short bed, manual transmission, and torquey 350 V8 under the hood. I suppose 2WD may be preferable to some, but not me – make it a true 4×4 and give it all the trimmings of a truck that at least looks like it could go off-road. The bidding isn’t a surprise to me, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get darn near $20,000 when all is said and done.

    I had an 89 4×4 , 350 and 5 spd. The bearing in 5th went at 130k. The next tranny had a bad syncro so 1st to 2nd always ground a bit. Definitely a light duty tranny. I wouldn’t tow with it. My truck front axle leaked at 5k and they never would fix it under warranty. They put in a new improved seal but the bearing was cooked. They were happy to do it on my dime when the warranty was gone. The ac control servos would jam. The vent had to be set to the middle. It had to move daily or would stick. Fun truck but built on a Friday and a piece of crap…
    Broke the rear in the ice storm of 93′. The 10 turns to connect it on one side never connected after that. . Terrible design. The torque snapped something . I didnt bother getting it fixed. I sold it at 148k. It hydro locked at 150k- head gasket. My buddy had to put in a crate motor. Took it to 260k. Still had the bad bearing in the axle I think. Be gentle to this one. The tranny’s were hard to find in 2000…
