Are those ashtray and knob labels on the dash factory or some tongue-in-cheek stickers from the ’60s? “Das Schmoken Dunker” too funny
I remember them well from the JC Whitney catalog!
Given Volkswagen’s whimsical, self-deprecating marketing of the day, it would not surprise me if they were both tongue-in-cheek AND factory.
My Javelin’s said “Ash Receiver”
“Der Putter Sparken” is one I always liked.
Hey those cigarette butts have been in there for decades!!!
Maybe those cigarette butts are why there’s an estate sale today?
Did VWs have gas gauges in ‘58?
58s did not have a gas gauge.
That is a Dehne accessory aftermarket gas gauge.
The ’58 had a foot lever on the floor that opened a valve to the reserve tank once you ran out of gas in the main tank (while driving.)
My late Dad had a blue ’58 back in the day.
Drop in a Porsche 356 power plant and double the horsepower!
Wasn’t 57 last year for the oval? ^^ Someone here will surely know.
Yes it was.
Karmann convertibles kept the oval a while longer….a lot longer. I don’t think it went away on Cabriolets until the mid-60’s. Probably had everything to do with the way those tops were assembled… like Carson custom tops of the day for us ‘Muricans.
This will be worth a lot restored.
